View Full Version : Trick to remove the hand guard with out tool?
I have never removed the hand guard on my A2.
I am told you can muscle it off.
Any advice so I don't destroy it during removal.
Thanks in advance, John.[Beer]
Find a friend with strong hands... They pull down on the delta ring and You pluck the handgaurds off.. That would be the easiest..

Practice and beefy wrists and shoulders.
Or, the two-man method mentioned above - one person grabs the rifle by the ring and gorillas it down while the 2nd man removes the handguards.

The first time I did it by myself I used the insulated handles of my channel locks, on each side of the ring, great leverage.
But now, I just use the custom tool Marlin made! [Beer]

I have a file for how to make your own handguard removal tool.
I made one of these for about $5 and it works great. You have to have a vice, a propane torch, and a pair of channel lock pliers but it's not hard to make.
eMail or PM me and I can send you the MHTML (web browser viewable) file ~ it's only 282kb. (I can't find the web site that I had originally copied it from.)

Yep, That's the one I made..
I didn't have all the fancy fuel line for mine though..[Wow2]
I just don't feel worthy...[Tooth]

I felt that the fuel hose would reduce the chance of damage/scratching of the gun.
I know the title of this thread it "...with out tool", but since this is so easy/cheap to make and use and we had a few folks give the only answer possible for removing the handguards without a tool (strong hands), I figured it couldn't hurt.
Just giving You a hard time Ginsue,,[Tooth]
I just had plastic tubing left over from another project covering mine..

It's all good! I thought I sensed sarcasm & humor in your reply.[Stooge]
I'd like to replace the red fuel line with some heat shrink tubing to improve the aestetics of the tool, but I'm out of the stuff big enough to fit and too cheap/lazy to go find more.

Ya, i made bascically the same tool. I just got sick of man handleing it all the time. Made the job much much easier.
I used the insulated handles of a small pliers to pull down on the ring and the hand guards fell off.
I installed a UTG 4 rail from C.T.D. which took about three minutes and seems to be very well made.
Bi pod went on a moment later and the AR is ready to create a little red mist come spring.
Look out Prairie Dogs here I come.[AR15]
Thanks again, John.

Sweet, but I think the rules state that if you don't post pics you have to bring it to a club shoot!
Or something like that. http://www.chiefsplanet.com/BB/images/smilies/smile-l.gif
I will try to post some pics soon.
I assume all the "club meetings" are on weekends which I work but I would be very interested to make it sometime.

Get some Duracoat and put a fancy camo job on it....[Beer]

I've actually considered that, but it negates that fact that I'm cheap and lazy!
Can I get a copy of that MHTML please? Would rather send an hour making it them buy it for 15 plus shipping.

Thanks.

~ sit on a chair w/ the rifle butt on the floor - so you sit higher than the rifle (leverage). Then use your right hand to push the spring down - use your left hand to take the handguard out one side at the time. Fiola!
edit.. make sure gun unloaded etc etc etc.. in short dont be a dumbass please. :D

Wow. I got your PM and have sent the file on to you, then I looked back at your original request and found that you had already included your eMail address. I must have been really out of it last night!
I also attached an MS Word document on how to refinish/refurbish worn USGI magazines. I've done this and found them to be at least as good as new commercially available mags.
ETA (Edited to add): If you make yourself one of these handguards please post a pic of it!

John,
Your question in regards to "can I do the hand-guards by hand??"
This depends largely in your hands. Do you have hands?
You've already seen the videos of those fancy tools and those spiffy homemade jobbies...
Now use your man-hands and get'r dun!
What if the zombies were coming? What would you do John!...would you say "oh shucks!" "I don't have a hand-guard removal tool!!!"
WHAT WOULD YOU DO JOHN!!!???

You're pretty danged funny Man-Hands.
Why don't you hop on over to the New Member Sign In forum (http://www.co-ar15.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=97) and start an Introduction thread for yourself.
I have a feeling that you're going to be a barrel of laughs (sorta like me [Coffee]).
