As a mechanic or "technician" I can not stop reading this thread. I am on page 33 and I can say that I would (if I had any money) pay someone to let me diagnose this vehicle just to know how it is blowing up an engine over and over again.

And there is no way I would be as calm as the owner is.

I'm on my 3rd ecoboost vehicle. Inconsistent performance is a word I'd use, but the power and torque are just addictive.

Pretty strange the guy's on his 3rd engine. I'd be pissed. He's handling it way better than I would.

I don't think it endemic to the ecoboost engine. There is something about this vehicle that is going wonky. Injector, intake, engine management issue, something. But it is weird and funky.

His first engine lasted 47K, next one 2K, next one 4k. That is not a lot of time between engines. Clearly there is something wrong.

ETA: and it isn't like it just died, it throws hard parts through the side of the block.

If I was a dodge/chevy/toyota dealership in the area and I heard about this I would offer to buy the vehicle from him for the price of one of mine. Then I would figure out what went wrong, put my best tech in the state on it or give it to my corporate engineers and show up the local dealerships. Then I would make a youtube of the whole thing and push that everywhere.

Here is my dealership stepping up to the plate when ford wouldn't. Here is my tech figuring out what went wrong with the vehicle when Ford couldn't. Here is the vehicle that I now use as my parts car 100K later running strong.

THAT would be awesome marketing.

I've been disappointed with ford the company lately too. Not the vehicles, as they're superior to the other offerings out at the moment, but in the way they deal with problems or perceived problems.

Ecoboost truck 1 awesome power, tows like a beast, 18-19 mpg ( nowhere near the 21 sticker, but..ok)
Ecoboost truck 2 noticeably less power( 1 second slower 1/4 mile), still tows like a beast, transmission pump leak issue, intercooler condensation problem, 15-17 mpg. fords response "well I guess you got a good one" (referring to other)
Ecoboost fusion 33mpg sticker, actual mpg 24-26. Fords response (shrugs).

That said, I'm doing better than coworkers with dodge's and Chevys with their front ends falling apart, beds cracking in half, cruise control failure, 15mpg with half the torque, rattles like a childs toy etc.

My next truck might have to be Toyota :(

I have heard both good and bad about them. Just like everything. My Dodge has 180K on it and has chewed up only $600 in non maint items in the 12 years I have had it, gets 18 in town and 21 on the highway. It is not going anywhere.[Flower]

I glanced at the first couple of pages. So #1 lets go with the rod through the block. #2 lets go with a rod through the block. Normally old school says on a factory engine that too many revs, too much abuse but we are dealing with a boosted engine and yes I have seen them go south in a hurry and some of the strangest things.

First thing with the new engines is did the same cyl go each time? At first thought they are losing the piston first. But you have to ask why. Too lean in that cyl? Bad batch from the supplier?

I do know one of the engineers that has worked on the ecoboost project since the beginning and the last word I heard was there is a lot of head scratching going on.

Most manufacturers will deny problems until their is enough pressure and or lawsuits. Like GM buying back 15 year old suburban/blazers. Toyota is like apple, great marketing and hiding of problems, mostly denial. Dodges have more repairs done under warranty then ford/Chevy. Nissans are average. Its all about driving what you like and having pride in your ride.

I don't know about ford but gm dumped all the field engineers that knew anything about 13 years ago in exchange for college grads that know jack shit. So engineers are useless. This goes back to the part replacers VS technicians thread.

My dad's 2010 4Runner dropped a valve into the motor with less than 5K on the clock..
Every manufacture is going to have bad parts in a given lot.

Toyota pretty much invented AQL and every major manufacture uses it today regardless of what they are producing.

Personally I would have made Ford take it back and switch me out after the 2nd one popped.

I read a few forum posts from other forums, says there is an issue with the "charge air cooler". Seems it cools too much causing condensation, then gets sucked into a cylinder causing "hydrolock". I'm guessing water in the cylinder blows the connecting rod through the block... http://www.tundraheadquarters.com/blog/2012/10/18/ford-f-150-problems-shuddering-power-loss-limp-mode/

Those MPG were with an ATV or motorcycle in the bed and loaded cab, or empty.

Towing it is 9-11mpg.

With them replacing the engine, you have to wonder, if they replaced everything to eliminate any chance of debri contamination from the previous failure. Also, are the owners using the correct oil for the engine, or merely going to jiffy lube? One problem with direct injection engines, there is nothing to keep the intake valves clean, since fuel doesn't wash them down. I've seen some ford, well mazda cx7(same engine as the ecoboost 4 cylinder) with coked up valves to the point it would not run. Separate issue from the 3 blown engines, but something to keep in mind.

Man, that really sucks for that dude. I got about 10 pages in before I stopped.

I have to say that I have been extremely happy with my 2011 FX-4 with the ecoboost engine. So far with just over 40,000 miles, it has been flawless. I am averaging 17.5 to 18 MPG's with out trying very hard to save gas. (It's rather fun to punch it off the light). I towed a 850+ pound quad, three dirt bikes and a metric shit ton of camping gear on a big trailer from Elizabeth to Taylor Park and back and averaged 14 MPG's. On the other hand, I had a guy on another forum send me a PM asking me about mine and said he was getting WAY worse gas mileage than me. The discrepancies are a little concerning.

I would imagine that every singe truck model on the planet has had numerous engines blow up. Especially with the popularity of the light trucks such as the F-150, Tundra, 1500's, and what not, but this just flat out sucks for that poor dude. Hopefully Ford makes it right with him. I have to admit, as much as I love my truck, the thought of it going out of warranty is a little bothersome. Especially after reading some of that thread.

Maybe I need that F-250 after all, but I've been really happy with the ecoboost so far.

Bet you money u-joints.

A new TSB came out 15Jul stating a replacement of drivelines.
In addtion to that, I need a whole new rear end. Pinon is whining on accel/decel between 50-60.
I never noticed it really, other than chalking it up to tire noise.

So, I get all new driveshaft, U joints, and all new rear end. Yay.....

Driveshaft has the Ujoints in it. Warranty is awesome. You don't want to know how much that would have cost.

Oh round trip thats potentially $2000K (what the service writer said)
I bought the truck when they ran the 'buy it this month and get a free 5/yr 100K powertrain warranty'.
I have a sneaky feeling I'm going to use a lot of it.

As a side note, I'm friends with the tech and he said that the F150 driveline issues seems to be more prevailent
with the ECO's not the v8. He said he's chased a driveline noise for a year on an another ECO and replaced the tranny,
rear end, driveline, and still cant figure it out.

It's owned by ford... The platform was designed by Volvo before Ford bought them, and pretty much all of the car was designed before Ford could fuck it up. Ford made changes to the chassis by changing out some of the aluminum parts for steel (big deal lol). My car was also made in Sweden. So, no, it's really not a Ford. Good try though.

The Administrator on that forum sounds as bad as Obama! Says AR15 forum members are trolling for justice...what is wrong with that? There used to be a day not so long ago when corporations depended on their reputations for success, now they just hide behind their fine print and disclaimers. Drones killing US citizens, high level racism and corporate apathy for their customers/victims. Personally, I'd rather build a GM truck from parts on Ebay and from a junk yard than be given a new Ford for free...and for the Administrator threatening AR15 forum members like he is a don of the forum mafia, ridiculous! The admin is a shill for the big corporation...Canada eh?

I worked for GM, my brother ran a Ford dealership, Dad's had his own shop for 30 years... Someone will hate whatever it is that you like... One thing I know with *any* kind of vehicle, if you get a shitty one, well... that's the luck, every brand has them. If you get a good one, take care of it, and it will take care of you. Peterson's Offroad gave second place to a Kia Sorrento in the 2005 or some year around then for fucks sake... Take care of your car if you have a good one, and it will do you right.

It's just hard to find a good Ford..... lol
