So I called applewood plumbing and heating out today to quote how much it would be to relocate my ac unit by 15 feet in a straight line, not around corners or anything. The tech told me it would be really easy and only take about 2 hours. He goes back to his truck to write the quote and comes back a few minutes later to tell me it would be 1700.00 plus the cost of the electrical work! Wow not that hard, only takes 2 hours but would cost 1700 bucks? Maybe I'm out of line but $850 an hour is a little ridiculous.

Get other quotes to see if it is what the market says its worth. It might be inline with the market.

That's applewood. Probably not $850 an hour. Probably going to use new refrigerant some electrical and copper supplies silver solder etc etc.

Not defending them by anymeans.

I had them out for a quote once to run an outlet to the garage. Was quoted $1100 so I politely told them no thanks. My father-in-law helped us do it and it only took a little over an hour and less than $100 in materials. I will never be calling applewood for anything again and from what others have said online, it seems that astronomical prices are the norm with them. Oh well, they are free to charge what they want but I'm sure as hell not paying their prices.

Applewood has the advantage of being abundant...I swear their guys reproduce (not getting into that). When every other HVAC company is scheduled out 2-3 weeks and they can send a guy the next day, that's an advantage you're going to pay for. Not defending them, as I've used them twice and been overcharged a lot, but I was thankful for it.

You should wait until A/C off season and get a number of quotes.

Yeah that's not a bad idea waiting until the off season to quote. I might do that if I can't find a reasonably priced outfit. I'm fine paying for good service and quality parts, but that's different from getting bent over for 2 hours of work

Plus if I could do the electrical myself you would think that would save a bunch

A couple years ago ago I got quotes on having the HVAC system in one of my rentals repaired. I called Applewood because they said they do quotes for free. In order to access to the unit you have to go onto the roof of the building and the Applewood tech said it would be a $400 hard access charge because he had to get on a ladder to diagnose the problem. I ended up having guy come over off of Craigslist and he diagnosed it for free.

If you think the repair costs are high get quotes on replacing the system and get lots of them. You will be amazed at the differences in quotes. I needed to replace the A/C and furnace in an 825 sqft condo. I got quotes as high as 9500 and as low as 1500.

I can say we have had some work on AC done recently and we had Plumbline and they did a good job and the prices were closer to ball park then others.

refrigerant, line set, labor etc moving an ac compressor is a little pricey but that is outrageous.... And they wonder why I won't go work for them after getting 30 requests in the mail to "join their team".... they do only hire licensed professionals and that is rare
