View Full Version : Any medical geniuses here? (injury here 10 minutes ago)

(warning: kinda nasty photo below)

I was just cutting up some chicken and I knocked the VERY sharp knife off of the counter. It bounced off of the floor and landed edge down on top of my big toe right in between the big knuckle on your foot and the smaller knuckle out on the big toe itself. Perfect shot. At first I thought I got lucky and that the dull side of the blade hit me, but no dice. Some blood started flowing (dark, dark red) but not too much. And it didn't hurt hardly at all. The cut is about 1/2 inch long.

Cleaned it out (that did sting a bit) and started looking at the wound. Pretty deep. Started to flex the toe and it feels really weird. I can flex the big knuckle fine up and down, but the little knuckle for the tip of the toe is jacked up. I can flex it downward, but not upward at all. Looking at my other foot, it sure feels like the tendon or whatever it is that controls stuff there is right under the damn skin. I'm wondering if I cut it, nicked it, etc. Maybe there's a bundle of tendons and I cut one of them?

I assume that if I cut the tendon that it would freaking hurt like hell. But it doesn't. I can walk around almost normally, just can't straighten out the big toe.

Of course I will see a doc ASAP, but any geniuses here have an opinion? Ever cut a tendon?

[ROFL1] I don't know about boots, you can bet that I will have slippers on at least the next time I'm wielding a knife. (and I do all the cookin 'round here)

I'd go to an Emergency Clinic of the 24 hour type. You need a tetanus shot if you have not had one in the last ten years. Delaying professional medical care could easily cost you your life. I'f this was Florida I'd say go immediately to an ER due to flesh eating bacteria... FFS go to a Doctor!

I don't know any in Gilpin County, but I really like and refer lots of folks to this guy (Denver):
Dr. Kenneth Morgan
950 E Harvard Ave
Suite 100
Denver, CO 80210
tel(303)772-8767 (tel:772-8767)

I think the docs in Gilpin start off with some bloodletting right away for just about anything. [panic]

Thanks for the info and the recommendation. I'll call him at 9:01 AM.

Probably good advice and thanks for it. However, I did have a tetanus shot last year and I have 3 kids sleeping with the wife at work. Since this thing doesn't hurt at all, isn't throbbing, and isn't swelling at all, I'm going to get it checked out ASAP in the morning. Weird...feels completely normal except I can't flex it.

Go in and see a doctor tomorrow. If you got a tendon or ligament it could or could not hurt. If you severed the tendon you can walk around without it and will have to decide if you want to be able to straiten out your toe or not. Being able to flex it downwards (bottom tendon) but not upwards (top tendon) may mean you got it. Trauma to an area can make it hard to move that area sometimes though. The dark dark red blood is just because by the time the blood reaches your toes it has expended most of its oxygen and gets darker. Sorry for the wishy washy answers but a physical exam will be the only way to really tell what you managed to do.

I had a fight bite right on/in the joint of my left ring finger. Swelling/infection curled it and useless, but once all that was gone, it remained kinda weak/less than full movement for a couple months, followed by another 6 of pain when squeezing hard or popping finger. Eventually did go away. Could be the injury swelling, or maybe I knicked but didnt cut. Not a clear answer but just my experience.

I would be concerned about cross contamination from the chicken as well.
We may witness you become a fowl individual, clucking about and complaining like an old hen.
Be sure to check your bowel movements, they may become white and egg shaped.

Seriously though, get yourself to the Doc.

It's just a toe. Save yourself the cost of a doctor visit, put a band aid on it, and move on.

Im not a doctor but I did stay at a holiday inn the other night.

See any awhite or red looking cord shaped things severed? Me neither. Go to a doc and get two sutures or put on a steri-strip and be a man.

note: I am not a doctor and I have no idea whatsoever what I am talking about.

Second. Meh. Rub some dirt in it.

I've worked in restaurants in the past and have witnessed some pretty bad cuts.. The way it usually goes is that by the time you get to the ER you sit around until all of the more important/emergency status people go ahead of you. When you finally see a doctor the wound has already dried up and there is really nothing they can do to it other than make sure it is clean and then they wrap a bandage around it. An urgent care may be a better place to go than an er.. Obviously you haven't done anything yet so it is way to late anyway.

I'm no doctor, either, but my prognosis for you is you'll live.

Now, I did play doctor with the neighbor girls a few times in my younger years. But I never saw anything like that.

Haha! You guys are too much. Just left the docs office. Severed extensor tendon just like Fentonite suggested. Got to get it re-attached.

Sucks, but no eggs coming out of my butt at least.

Fentonite plays a Doctor on TV.

In reality his advice I would always take. Good Dude to know in medical area.

Buddy did exactly that here in my kitchen about a year ago. The ER doc missed the fact that the tendon was cut almost through and just stitched up the skin. It broke shortly after and he's been screwed up since. Go get it looked at if you haven't already.

This was my first inclination for a deep cut too, but I don't think super glue is the proper fix for a sliced tendon. ;)

Id head to the ER. If it feels wierd to move, you may have partially cut a tendon. Is the toe bent in an odd direction?
If so, means the tendon is either partially cut to point of being useless or it is severed. I wouldn't wait until tomorrow and
not fuck around with a big toe injury such as this.

Sounds like you have serious tendon damage and will probably require mionor surgery.
