The motor city, love 'em, hate 'em, it was the epicenter of the booming auto industry for a long time. But recently it has been in decline. Pro-union, left-wing policies have run the city into the ground, and now... Bankruptcy.

Detroit files for largest municipal bankruptcy in US history

Detroit filed for the largest municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history Thursday after steep population and tax base declines sent it tumbling toward insolvency.
The filing by a state-appointed emergency manager means that if the bankruptcy filing is approved, city assets could be liquidated to satisfy demands for payment.
Kevin Orr, a bankruptcy expert, was hired by the state in March to lead Detroit out of a fiscal free-fall, and made the filing Thursday in federal bankruptcy court.
"Only one feasible path offers a way out," Gov. Rick Snyder said in a letter to Orr and state Treasurer Andy Dillon approving the bankruptcy. The letter was attached to the bankruptcy filing.
"The citizens of Detroit need and deserve a clear road out of the cycle of ever-decreasing services," Snyder wrote. "The city's creditors, as well as its many dedicated public servants, deserve to know what promises the city can and will keep. The only way to do those things is to radically restructure the city and allow it to reinvent itself without the burden of impossible obligations."
Snyder had determined earlier this year that Detroit was in a financial emergency and without a plan to improve things. Snyder hired Orr in March, and he released a plan to restructure the city's debt and obligations that would leave many creditors with much less than they are owed.
Orr was unable to convince a host of creditors, including the city's union and pension boards, to take pennies on the dollar to help facilitate the city's massive financial restructuring.
Some creditors were asked to take about 10 cents on the dollar of what the city owed them. Underfunded pension claims would have received less than 10 cents on the dollar under that plan.
A team of financial experts put together by Orr said that proposal was Detroit's one shot to permanently fix its fiscal problems.
The filing leads to a 30 to 90 day period that will determine whether or not the city of Detroit is eligible for Chapter 9 protection, and define the number of claimants who may compete for Detroit’s limited settlement resources. The petition seeks protection from unions and creditors who are renegotiating $18.5 billion in debt and liabilities, according to the Detroit Free Press. “The President and members of the President’s senior team continue to closely monitor the situation in Detroit,” White House spokeswoman Amy Brundage said in a statement Thursday.
“While leaders on the ground in Michigan and the city’s creditors understand that they must find a solution to Detroit’s serious financial challenge, we remain committed to continuing our strong partnership with Detroit as it works to recover and revitalize and maintain its status as one of America's great cities,” the statement read.

I can't help but wonder- what if they tried something unprecedented like in the Robocop series (I know far fetched), but had private industry take over and run the city? It's never been tried before, and since most businesses run for profit instead of deficit, it might fix Detroit... Or not. But nevertheless, let this be a warning to other cities (NY, Chicago, all of CA)- this could happen to you!

Not could...will happen to other cities and the entire state of California.

Liberals eschew history, economics, and reality unless said topics involve their own twisted ideas.

And this happens AFTER the auto (union) bail out with our taxes. WTF??

No doubt about it. There will be many more municipalities following suit in the not-so-long-term, but don't count on many of them being publicized. It just doesn't go along with the media's agenda.... Detroit was just too big not to mention, just once. Just wait. We'll see CA do the same someday.

I thought there were several, smaller, municipalities in CA that already have filed for Chapter 9 bankruptcy. But yes, roberth is correct, not could, would... I stand corrected on that one. [oops]

I think they used the bailout to move their facilities to Mexico.

I think Stockton California was the next largest now that Detroit filed.

I saw a blurb talking about residents moving away and thus their revenue went down. It's pretty telling what the government thinks of its citizens. We're revenue generators and not much more.

Sad to see this, though I had always been pretty sure it was inevitable.

I saw that, -1.1M in like 14 years or so... Why do you think that is? Oh yeah, because they created a hostile work environment there so businesses left, therefore so did the employees. Didn't help that unions aren't cheap, and pretty much ran everything in that city. Couldn't agree more that the Detroit City Gov thinks their citizens are just a meal ticket and funding for their liberal pet projects.

Sad to see this, though I had always been pretty sure it was inevitable.
Same here- I figured it was only a matter "when" not "if" with Detroit. Anyone care to place bets on who's next? I got $1 on Chicago or Baltimore.

The 1.1M took 60 years, not 14, but they managed to lose about a million in the 40 years between 1967 and 2007. After the 1967 riots, white flight accelerated by a factor of about 3, over decline rates prior to that, with peak loss rates of over 60000 per year in the late 60s.

No surprise that the bonus list showed that all major cities in Commiefornia are on the verge... And also no surprise that Camden is on there, that place is a shithole.

It needs to be reopened as a zombie/post-apocalypse theme park. They need to hurry while zombies are still in fashion.

Yep! Take a look at the numbers in this article. 700,000 'citizens', down from millions. Check out the projected loss to the retirement plans, and others. Staggering! Goodbye, America... http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2013-07-18/detroit-prepares-file-overnight-bankruptcy

I bet you could find a nice solid building somewhere in Detroit, and just set up there and be like Will Smith's character in I am Legend.

"Ingham County Circuit Court Judge Rosemarie Aquilina said the bankruptcy filing violated the state's constitution, which she says prohibits actions that will lessen pension benefits of public employees, including those in Detroit."

-there's just no comprehension, whatsoever, that the money is finite. Keep spending, it'll last forever....
