View Full Version : Anyone a MD? Need IV Antibiotics >.< (Hoping to avoid ER)
Short window for an answer before I just check in here at work. Looking for anyone that can prescribe or knows a way to get IV antibiotics that's not the ER. Local urgent cares dont have it, or said it would be several hours wait as they only have 1 RN/MD (Wtf if busy on weekends, why no staff?)
Fortunately I work in a hospital so ER is there if I need it. Infection is in my finger joint spreading up my hand. Little puncture got some bacteria in it probably from some decomposing watermelon I rinsed off for chickens. (Or many other sources) Woke up w/ pain at 4am, little redness/stiffness/pain to move. I had a spare antibiotic prescription of Keflex, took a pill. Another at 830, still spreading with both redness and pain if poked further up the hand. Had a fight bite 2 years ago that was very similiar and urgent care doc in ft collins had me rush to ER. At this point quite painful/swollen/inflexible and not responding to the Keflex. So another hour without options Ill just check in.
Could be blood poisoning. Could it be a venomous spider bite? Either way, get your butt to a doctor, stat.
...and no, I'm not a Dr., I did not stay in a Holiday Inn Express, nor did I play one on TV.

You work at a hospital and you go on the internet for advice ??
Just wait for Obamacare to save you. Hydrogen Peroxide on the wound will help.
I'm not medical, just lowly security supervisor. Not looking for advice, just reference/hookup/etc since local alternatives have failed so far. People get all kinds of wierd help off this forum and others. But if not, I do know Ill need to walk 30 foot to the check in desk.
Well past hydrogen peroxide. Very tiny wound, infection is all in the finger and up the hand. I did rub scrub-stat on it for hell of it.
Same advice I gave GilpinGuy for his sliced toe.

But seriously, if you have a spreading infection get to a doctor immediately.
I get infections all the time in my fingers from hangnails and H P takes out the redness and pain with nothing but a little stinging. Post a picture of the wound and we will see what it looks like. But chances are you will need a doctor soon. If none of our home remedies work that is.
Probably best to get to the doctor. Could be MRSA or something

Haha hey y'all who wants to assume lots of legal liability for me??!!!
How would seeing a physician and a ensuing prescription be bad? Looking for a Dr that wasn't in an ER costing double a GP. It's not like I got shot in a bad robbery and looking for someone to hand me some leftover percs to take the edge off.
The only thing readily available is injectable penicillin or tablet amoxacillin. IV stuff pretty much comes from the ER
And Keflex isn't exactly for this kind of infection anyways.

Precisely, how did you have a spare Rx of abx? You're supposed to take them until they're gone... [facepalm]
And if you're worried about the being able to afford the cost of the ER bill, try looking at the cost of an amputation of your finger or worse, your hand.
So.....anyone know if he is OK?

Finger is too swollen to type, probably... Or they're in the process of cutting his finger off.

I threw away probably 20 bags of IV Cipro a couple years ago. Hate to think how much all that cost.
Got busy. Fortunately I'm friends with a few director people and talked to them. Most of course said be seen, but about 2 hours after initial post, it had stopped spreading. Another hour and pain lessinging except still at the joint. As of this morning it's now just an inch around it. I can flex albeit still painfully.
As far as spare rx, that was from a year ago, I was getting recurring infections on some ingrown/injury related toenail problems. Dr gave me a refill on the rx if I needed which I of course filled and saved for a rainy day.
Was really close to being seen, if I'd been at home I'd probably have done it, but being at work where I could be seen instantly if it had kept spreading I chanced it a little. The last one they said losing stuff was possible, this was similar but not quite as bad so I tried not to panic.
We'll see if in a few days when I run out, whether it's still an issue at the wound site, but by then probably can just make the trip to Ft Collins for the GP I saw under less urgent circumstances when I lived up there.
