View Full Version : 870 EJECTS WEAKLY

I have this new 870 that has been having weak ejection from day one.
Unfired shells and snap-caps will fly off the ejection port as they should, but fired shells will barely fall out and sometimes just stovepipe.
Before you ask, yes, I am pumping the damn thing as it should.
The ejector spring was just replaced by Bert, so we can rule that out.
It seems to be quite a common issue on newer 870s
I have mostly shot Winchester Universal .
Some people on the web have resolved the issue by using better quality shells but then again to others it made no difference.
I will try some AA as soon as I can find some, but does anybody have any suggestion in the meanwhile?

We ran 870's for years at Scout camp with very few issues and you can imagine the abuse they took. The newer 870's seem to lack the quality of the older ones. Unfortunate because they were the affordable work horse shotgun. I hope you find a solution and please update if you do.

Maybe try replacing the extractor and extractor spring . maybe the extractor dosent have a firm grip on the shell and the ejector cant sling it out. I have 2 870 but have never ran in to an issue like you are having. I know my 870 police dosent like the cheapie lo-brass stuff they get stuck in the chamber and the chamber and whole barrel are polished.

I don't think the extractor is at fault here guys, as long as it is hooking the rim and withdrawing the hulls it is working as planned.
Low brass allows more hull area to expand and attempt to "grip" the chamber and increases friction.
Just a thought but I wonder if the chambers are a smidge undersized.
Let me do a bit of homework and Lu, it might be worth taking a chamber cast and see how it stacks up against a print.

Cleaned out the extractor channel, filed the extractor smooth (had some burrs) and a couple of sharp edges on the barrel extension...
So far 25 shells trough and no stove pipes...
Knock on wood.

This seems to be a fairly common problem for newer Remington's. I owned two that needed some "adjusting".

A little off topic but I have a newer 870 Magnum Express that fails to feed frequently due to the carrier not lifting high enough and causing the front of the shell to hit the bottom of the chamber. I have cleaned and oiled several times and still no luck. Any thoughts on that one? Is this another mass production flaw of the newer 870's? My old Wingmaster has never had an issue. Thanks for any suggestions.

It sure seems like remington dosent give a shit any more, lots and lots of problems in the last 5 years.

Your time frame is correct. 2008 Freedom Group A.K.A Cerebus Holdings purchased Remington, Bushmaster, DPMS and a couple others plus a couple of ammo manufacturers.

Extraction was never an issue (thank God!).
Ejection was lame, but it looks like we got that figured out.

The chamber is usually under size and not surface finished properly. This is what I recommend if you are not comfortable being your own gun smith.

Polish the chamber with 0000 Steel wool and oil. Wrap it on a wood dowel attached to a drill. In and out, wipe clean and insert a "used" shell to drop out with gravity.
If you need to remove more than this a brake caliper hone (http://www.amazon.com/CTA-Tools-1120-Small-Cylinder/dp/B0035533GU/ref=sr_1_fkmr2_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1374764575&sr=8-1-fkmr2&keywords=small+Brake+Caliper+Hone) (link) with plenty of oil and a few back and forth passed, steel wool, check drop out w/ shell.

870 with loading and extracting issues. Blasted quite a few shells to heat the 870 up and have the issues show up. Be patient and when it's running smooth you will never give it up.

Action bar is not pushing shell release back enough at open stroke.
Found casting step under action bar on shell release side, filed, OK now.
Action bar nut was loose, blue loctite.
Deburr action bars
Adjusted action bars to slide smooth.
Polished chamber.
Removed metal from stock bolt that entered bolt chamber (Bolt hitting on open stroke).
Removed metal from sled hitting back of bolt chamber.
Found the hood lock edge not chamfered - fixed
Slide release area for trigger lock smoothed (Minimal removal for saftey)
Found that shell is recessed below barrel edge. Breech bolt hitting causing burr.
Checked recess for shell ring and removed overhang burr and broke sharp edge of undercut
Filed and stoned perpendicular to bore until shell is slightly above barrel edge .005".

Smooth as silk and instant pump/fire when needed.
