Apparently those pesky new background check fees made it "impossible" to run that gun buyback up in Boulder.

There's a lot of sketchy info in this article, but anyway - I guess their biggest problem was trying to find an FFL they could pay to run the transactions through.

... and I was looking forward to seeing that sculpture.

Organizers cancel Boulder gun buyback at request of sheriff
Strict new gun law would make event logistically problematic

Organizers have canceled a gun buyback at the request of Boulder County Sheriff Joe Pelle, who said Colorado's new gun laws would make the Aug. 4 event nearly impossible to stage.

"The bottom line is what we anticipated doing would still be legal -- but procedurally we can't follow through with it at this time," Pelle said Tuesday.

A stricter law that went into effect July 1 requires buyers to go to a licensed firearms dealer and undergo a background check. The InstaCheck systems used in the checks are not mobile, which means they couldn't be used at the sheriff's compound where the buyback was planned.

"It's not a portable system," Pelle said. "It can't be done at the site."

Essentially, for the event to work, Pelle said the group would have to find a licensed firearms dealer to host the event and then pay the dealer per transaction, "which becomes very unproductive," he said.

Together Colorado -- a group that bills itself as a nonpartisan multi-faith organization -- had planned the event.

In an e-mail announcing the cancellation, Sheila Dierks said: "Sheriff Pelle has stood strong for this event, has done tremendous work to make it happen and he is as disappointed as we are."

Event organizers had planned to give gift cards or tickets to sporting events to people who turned in firearms. Students raised nearly $8,000 to purchase the incentives.

The idea was to collect guns and then immediately hand them over to the Sheriff's Office for destruction. Some of the remnants of the destroyed firearms would then be passed along to Boulder-area metalworking artist Jessica Adams to use for a sculpture aimed at creating gun violence awareness.

After consulting Deputy County Attorney Dea Wheeler, Pelle had concluded earlier that as long as members of Together Colorado passed required background checks, it would be legal for them to purchase firearms at the August buyback.

While he said he understands organizers may be disappointed, he said the "larger good" is accomplished by the background check requirement.

"Unintended consequences"

Indeed.

Cracks me up how they say "its not a portable system" and "can't be done on site".
Bull Puckey! All one needs is a cell phone or a laptop. I guess all these years at gunshows the dealers were doing it wrong!
My guess is every FFL they contacted told them to pound sand.

Either that or the members of " Together Colorado" knew they couldn't pass the required background checks.

I have my CHP thru Boulder Cty/Pelle, but I didn't forget for a moment that he supported ALL the gun bills - including those that didn't make it into law. He is no 2A fan and did not stand with the rest of the CO sherrifs.

Oh the irony!

Pass new gun laws to make people feel safer only to overwhelm the firearm industry, sell out all ammunition, reloading components, magazines, pistols, and rifles (especially AR's).

And now the very laws they fought for are now preventing them from getting those dangerous guns off the streets!

Wouldn't it be a GREAT turn of events, if the gun-grabbers realized this and started to head up the movement to repeal those laws, only so they could have more legal buybacks?! It'll never happen, but we can dream!

Is the issue here that the event company and not the sheriffs department would be taking possession of the turned in weapons?

Either way I screw you hippies. Man I dislike Boulder.

This was my first thought. F*** Boulder. Dirty damn hippies trying to create some kind of liberal/socialist utopia. Wasn't CU the one trying to ban CC on campus? CO would be a little bit better if all of Boulder just moved to Illinois.

Yes.. the group is receiving firearms from individuals thus they must undergo a background check like everyone else.

I could see a lot of negative publicity for an FFL if they participated in this BS.

Pfff I'd have volunteered. (I am a FFL)

This is how I'd roll.

Do a check at the beginning.... Oh damn, it's just taking forever to clear.

At the very end, oh damn, you didn't get an approval but I just logged these all in my books so I have legal possession of them.

Give them to the Sheriffs Department? Nah, doesn't sound fun. Thanks though. *Drive off with 500 boulder firearms*

[troll face]

ETA: Don't forget the whole obligatory "oh damn, if only you had taken the names of the people you got them from so we could do a check and return them. Shoot." "Oh well, I'll just take these back to work and destroy them all it's the only thing I know is legal under the law. *dripping in sarcasm*"

I like the way you think.
