My nephew is graduating from college, and I want to give him an AR as a graduation present. I don't have the funds to buy him one right now, so I started rummaging through my parts bins to see how close I could get. I guess it finally paid off to be a hoarder, because I was able to build a complete rifle, strictly from my collection of parts!

but... I went to the range today, and remembered why the carry handle is in the parts bin. It's crap, and the mechanism has way too much play. So I'll have to order a rear sight of some sort for it. Next, the bolt usually won't lock back after the last round. The bolt catch is fine, so I swapped out the buffer spring and ordered a heavier buffer, to try and slow thing down a bit.

So, I almost built a complete AR from my parts bin. Pretty fun day.

Nice and congrats to the nephew.
What part of the rear sight mechanism has too much play? It may be as simple as a detent ball/spring.

Nice and congrats to the nephew.
What part of the rear sight mechanism has too much play? It may be as simple as a detent ball/spring.

As the rear aperture is lowered, it tilts back allowing the detent ball to slide out of its detent, and the aperture starts twisting counterclockwise on the handle. The detent ball re-seats and the aperture squares up as it raises. The rotational change is enough to affect windage. There's an awful lot of play between the aperture and handle assembly (rotational and front/back tilt). Not so much play that the ball/spring can escape, but enough for the ball to slide out of the decent.

That's awesome. Your nephew is lucky to have an Uncle like you!

No way I could build a whole rifle just from my spare parts. Anytime I wind up with a lower, I find something to do with it. Then I have to restock my spare parts. Then I get another lower...vicious cycle.
