Just out of curiosity, how much are hides worth? I don't think I would ever spend the time on it with the elk I get because they end up being 4 miles from camp and isn't worth the extra trip, but if I got one close I might be into bringing it back in for tanning.

I always trade my capes for free mounting so I know bull elk capes are worth at least a couple hundred!

depending on whats been done $75-hundreds if not an easy $1K
basic fleshed & salted runs $50-150 + s&h
depending on the extent of the tanning process $500-1K. also depends if the cape's on, etc

i just picked up a few cape on buffalo hides fleshed & salted for $150.00 going to need some work but a good project. a freind of the family's a taxidermist so we're doing a deal on the hides (hair on) plus i'm giving him one for the hides for his labor

Has anyone tried to get hides from rocky mountain natural meats? They process bison meat for commercial sale and wondering what they do with the hides?

cheers
