I had been wrestling with some seats in the back of a BMW coupe and my shirt had untucked and exposed my CCW. I then had to run the car over to the local car wash. He saw me and came up to me.

"Hey, um you know your exposed right?"

"oops, my bad."

" no worries"

Damn cops getting into my business. Sheesh.

At least my dags are still alive.

i suppose I should check that more often. Lol.

That's cool. My neighbor was temporarily detained at a car wash for exposing his ccw. 6 cops and a dog. Slow day in Brighton that day.

There is only 1 "internet insult" for that kind of fail. That word is "n00b". haha. Glad he was a friendly cop.

Isn't that just "open carry"?

That's another reason to carry AIWB. You can see when you're exposed.

However, this scares me more with AIWB:

Considering I carry all day at work, and work on cars some of which have expensive paint jobs the last thing I want is my pistol dragging over a fender as I try to reach for something.

You mean the Snap-On man didn't give you a fender skirt for Xmas?
You need to buy more tools from him!

Seriously though, kudos to the cop for not being a douchenozzle about it.
What agency if you don't mind?

Two quick questions.

First, are you afraid someone is going to shoot you at work so you feel the need to be armed?

Second, when you were informed that you were "exposed" was your first reaction to look down and check your zipper?

Can't carry at work (gov't building - gun-free zone and all), but always keep my CCW in the holster, in the passenger seat driving to and from work. Got pulled over for speeding last week in Aurora; cop saw my pistol in the seat and asked if I was an officer or have a CCW permit. Decided not to argue that I don't need a permit to carry in my car, and he didn't mess with me about it beyond that.

Back on topic, why is it not considered open carry if your CCW is exposed?

What the hell is wrong with the edit feature that it doesn't recognize apostrophes?

Just the grip was out because it was not a purposeful open carry for me. He was just letting me know nicely.

In the several years that I've a CCW I have been pulled over for this or that a bunch of times. Every time I gave the officer my DL and CCW at the same time and I never had a problem. I figure they'd rather know before it pops up on their computer - it'll just make them nervous I imagine. Never once did the officer ask to see my weapon or anything.

Shouldn't "pop up" on their computer any longer. That DB was purged. Now, in your county of issue, if stopped by Sheriff, who knows?

Just the same, while no duty to announce in CO, most will appreciate the heads up.

I didn't know that the DB was purged, but it doesn't matter. The Gilpin County boys are cool as hell anyway. I have no problem with Sheriff Hartman or any of his guys.

The best reasoning I've heard for giving them your CCW with your DL is that it lets them know right away that you're not a felon and allows them to slide you more towards the "citizen" category and away from the "customer" category during their initial contact. That's been my SOP for the last eight years. Since I started doing that I haven't had any issues stemming from my pistol when I've gotten pulled over.

Sounds like the cop was just doing you a favor. I mention it to guys when I see their pistol exposed too. Seems like common courtesy to me.

That would be my thought as well. Your gun was concealed and you have a CCW making you legal. Then it get un concealed and showing, now it's open carrying right lol. Wouldn't you be legal any way :-) Just thinking creative..... Seemed like a nice policeman....

I think giving them your CCW and saying whether you are carrying or not carrying shows respect to them and puts them at a little more ease. I've gotten out of a few tickets because of it b

I used to always do this till one night I got pulled over handed him both ID's and told him where I had it on me and he freaked out and said why the Fu%$ are you telling me that! I politely said I was told it was common courtesy so when you look up my DL you didn't have to "wonder" if i had it on me. He said I don't care if you have it or not! I said sorry... he gave me a ticket.[Mad] three months later he was shot while on duty! It wasn't me though. I don't tell them anymore.

And I would guess it was that apathy that got him shot.

The last time I volunteered that information the officer drew her gun on me, ordered me out of my car with my back towards her, down on my knees, and hands behind my head. She then removed my gun took it back to her car and told me to get in mine. When she was finished writing my ticket (speeding) she gave my gun back to me field stripped and told me not to re assemble it until she left.

I have not volunteered that Information since, and have not had an issue.

Totally uncalled for and I would be livid if some numbskull field stripped my firearm. I think I would have called for a supervisor and I would also be curious to know if she was a qualified armorer.
I think I would have filed a formal complaint.
Abusive and power hungry twat is what she sounded like.

You know when I first got my CHP I asked a few officers from different agencies what they would like to see from a holder if contacted. Answers ranged all over from the board from "yes I appreciate knowing and thanks" to "hell no, I don't care and don't want to know" and everything in between.
FWIW I have been pulled over twice for minor violations(expired plate and headlight out) since getting it and in both instances provided my permit along with all pertinent information. Both times the officers were cool and thanked me, one asked where it was and requested I keep my hands on the wheel and the other asked that I unholster, unload and place the weapon on the dash. Both ran me through the computer and returned my paperwork.
The one that had me unload and dash my MicroCompact asked to check it out and was kind of enamored with it, he really liked it.
No citation in either case was issued.
Both watch supervisors received a phone call commending the officers conduct during the contact.
Even ended up doing night sights for the one officer who liked my MicroCompact(gave him a business card when all was said and done)

That incident was about 10 years ago after I had just received my permit. At the time I was furious but didn't even think about contacting a supervisor or filing a complaint. Older (and wiser?) now and definitely would if it ever happened again.

Same here! About 10 years ago headlight out, speeding, proof of insurance(had it just not the current card) and I got a ticket for all of it!

During my classes they recommended that you don't tell. Said that if it is an anti-gun cop the odds of you getting a ticket go way up and it could lead to other problems with the officer.

I was pulled over and had an officer state that they see in their system that I have my CCW. Wanted to know where the gun was and all. Didn't ask to see it and didn't seem overly concerned about it. Said to leave it where it was at and politely sent me on my way.

I got dinged by a CSP bike cop on 470 by 285. 73 in a 65 and no seatbelt. I pulled over and into the dirt, so he had the entire shoulder and then some. IIRC, he came to the passenger side anyway. I gave ID, ccw, insurance, title. He had me get out, keep my hands where he could see them and walk over to him. Placed my hands behind my head and he held both my thumbs with one hand while disarming me with the other. Told me to go wait in my truck.

Came back with the seat belt ticket. "Here's your gun (slide locked back), mag, and Barney bullet" [Roll1] Don't gut it back together until you're gone. This was about 8 a.m. on a Monday morning.

Wow the two stories about disarming are downright ridiculous. Any cops on here know why that would be done? Especially when it is the permit holder who offered up the knowledge?
i see the pros to telling and possibly getting out of the ticket but if my son had to watch that I'd be fucking furious.

Your CCW does not show up in their records when they pull you over. That was the case years ago but that has since changed.

My last instructor (an ex LEO) said to show it because most cops will appreciate it and they will treat you better.. not sure I believe that...

Probably ex east or west coast LE now working here. LE in CA will ask you for your license, registration and insurance. The very next question is, "do you have any weapons or drugs in the vehicle?" Always answered no except one time; I had a .22 rifle and a .22 revolver in the trunk in cases and no ammo (shot it all earlier that day) and I told the officer yes. That turned into a three hour ordeal with me and a friend handcuffed and sitting on the shoulder of the road with two backup units responding including a Sargent with a K-9. Why? Because I told the initial LE that I would not allow a search of my car under any circumstances. I continued to stand on my rights and refused. Eventually I received a fix it ticket for excessive exhaust noise (glass packs) and was released. I really don't like CA and never want to go back. I love it here in CO and I will do my best to keep CO free.
