i remembered hearing that putting pepsi on your car battery would remove corrosion. i was curious if it would do the same for my old mil surp bullets. so i tryed it and it worked, they look like new. so is this a good idea to do, or do you guys think that this could cause problems for my gun?

Generally speaking if you have to ask if something is a good idea it isn't [Beer]

that being said, you need to some how remove the remaining residue from the cola.

well after i took it out, i rinsed it and dried it.

i mean i dont think it would cause any problems. im just wondering if being in an acid like pepsi would weaken the primer or something and possibly cause slam fires.

has anyone heard of using this to clean old bullets?

I personally wouldn't do it.
and I would also avoid anything with amonia in it.

how much are we talking about here? (rounds)

and what exactly needs to be cleaned up?

Introducing anything like soda in the primer area or case mouth area would worry me about contamination or deadening the primer or powder.

What would be wrong with using some steel wool?

treboris
01-28-2009, 09:11
well for one im kinda lazy and was just curious. i was gonna use it on my 8 mauser, 30-06 , and 7.62-39. i only did it to one round of 30-06 so far just to try it.

For the most part, Military rounds do have a sealent on them to protect them from moisture.. That said, chances are if it has corrosion on it,, The sealent isn't quite as effective as it once was..

treboris
01-28-2009, 09:51
well they not really corroded, i guess you would say tarnished,

does it make a difference on accuracy or anything if you use clean or tarnished rounds?

If its corroded you might be better off buying a tumbler. If you do any kind of polishing of anything that is the way I do it. And I keep plenty lazy doing it. I had some rust colored Mauser bullets that I thru in mine and 6 hours later they were bright and shiny. I also use it for brass that I am going to reload because it makes sizing them easier. Just my .02 worth though.

You don't want them caked with mud. But it shouldn't make a difference if the bullets are tarnished. The cases on the other hand could jam in the chamber. But its a remote chance.

so it is worth putting them in pepsi for a couple mins just to clean the brass.

Normally no. But if they leak and they get soda in the powder they might not fire. Do you have any pictures of them? What part of town are you in? If you want to leave them with me overnight I can throw them in my tumbler and get them nice and shiny for you.

Pardon my ignorance, but I thought that it was bad juju to put full/primered round in a tumbler.

Wondered that myself, after searching around seems some people think it is not a good idea and others say they do it. Couldn't find anything about someone actually having a problem. Anyway have some DAG 7.62 and about 30% of it seems to have some green spots on the shoulder of the round. Some wipes off with a cloth (shirt), and some seems to be worse. None seems to have actually eaten through the case (is that possible?).

So, should I manually scrub it with some steel wool, tumble it, or just shoot it?

cheers

Sodas are great for cleaning up battery terminals, but I would never clean corrosion off of a round with it. Worse case scenario, you get enough liquid in the powder that you get a squib or partial burn off a round. Squibs are pretty easy to ID from the report, but a partial burn could actually be enough to cycle a semi-auto weapon and leave the bullet half way down the barrel. Ka-boom on the next round. Only seen a partial burn once and it was a .22LR rifle with once wet ammo. Sorry, ammo is just too cheap in comparison to the gun and my face and fingers to take that kinda chance with it. JMHO.

This. Pepsi/Coke are bad ideas but if you like shiny rounds (I do), tumble them in corn cob or walnut media. Use a squirt or 2 of Brasso (let it dry) in the media for a nice polish.

I use corn cob media with roushe (spelling) and they come out brighter than new rounds. I throw my cigarettes ashes in there as a mind abrasive too.

Ashes work great for cleaning silver BTW. Gets the tarnish off very cleanly. So if anybody is cleaning silver bullets or what not. Get some ashes and a clothe I use TP wet it dabb it in the ashes then rub it on the silver and it cleans it like there's nothing on it. That's what gave me the idea to add it to the tumbler.

I have heard some people wear silver in non bullet forms like jewlry that they wear around like its good for something?[Coffee]

If you have a un-dead problem and you have the time, some dowels from HD and a large pencil sharpener work pretty well. If are running low on time because the sun is going down and the night before you had to kill Dracula's bride in selfdefese. Take a pool cue stick and snap in half over your knee. now does anybody got tips for dealing with a zombie problem?

Do’s
1) Organize before they rise!
2) They feel no fear, why should you?
3) Use your head: cut off theirs.
4) Blades don’t need reloading.
5) Ideal protection = tight clothes, short hair.
6) Get up the staircase, then destroy it.
7) Get out of the car, get onto the bike.
8) Keep moving, keep low, keep quiet, keep alert!
9) No place is safe, only safer.
10) The zombie may be gone, but the threat lives on.

Donts
1) Don’t be “that one asshole,” in your group.
2) Don’t get too creative with zombie defense.
3) Don’t stand in front of the window. That’s just foolish.
4) Don’t broadcast your presence. Zombies may be listening.
5) Don’t go down. Zombies can go down too.
6) Don’t try to reunite with friends / family over long distances.
7) Don’t keep zombies in the basement. Even if they are your zombie family.
8) Don’t forget to shut the door behind you. Zombies often arrive without calling first.
9) Don’t get sentimental. Zombies won’t.
10) Don’t set zombies on fire. Burning zombies smell terrible.

Oh. Why didn't you just say so?

Well if your ever interested in getting one set up for yourself. The tumbler was $40 at Harbor Freight and the media was $12 at a reloading store. Anyone could set this up in their own home. I would suggest leaving it out in the Garage on the cement floor because it can be noisey. And it shakes a lot.

It shines up just about anything that will fit in the bowl BTW.
