"Lonesome Dove" on AMC tonight - one of the better westerns, with Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones. (If you can endure the commercials.)

Wait... Did you say one of the "better" westerns? Blasphemy. To anyone with any taste it's one of the BEST westerns. Duvall is god-like in that series.

I assume Duvall is Cal? I've not seen the miniseries, but I have it set to record. Can't wait.

Robert Duvall is Gus and Tommy Lee Jones is Call, once you have seen it I'm sure you will think that the cast nailed the roles

Duvall is Gus, TLJ is Woodrow Call.

I'd have bet money it would be the other way around. Now I really can't wait to see it. Who's Lorrie?

There were some good lines in that flic:

"Lonesome Dove: Return (#1.4)" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1502546/) (1989) [Gus refuses to have his leg amputated knowing he will die if he doesn't]
Woodrow Call (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000169/): What do you want legs for anyway? You don't like to do nothing but sit on the porch and drink whiskey!
Gus McCrae (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000380/): I like to kick a pig every once in a while. How would I do that?

Eh, I'm not a McMurtry fan. Read the book because of all the hoorah and hated it. When I watched it on TV, it just couldn't hold a candle (IMO) to Rio Bravo or McLintock! or The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. Hell, I even enjoyed Silverado and Quigley Down Under more.

Way too much violence for me. Watched it twice before just make sure. Yep, too many killings and stabbings and shootings and fights for me to watch it again.

Well, I didn't want to have list a compendium of all the Westerns I thought were better than Lonesome Dove. I'm already in the minority in this thread, just offering an alternate perspective.

..of course, true rock and roll aficionados recognize that the late "Lonesome Dave" was in Foghat! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dave_Peverett
