http://www.foxnews.com/us/2013/07/30/alaska-man-kills-charging-bear-with-assault-rifle/13 rounds, so who needs more than that?

13 rounds of 5.45 and the bear still walked off before dieing. Maybe get a bigger gun for hikes in bear country.

lol 13 rounds didn't kill it right away. I only carry a gun when I hike to scare off wildlife with the noise and bullets. I don't plan on killing a mountain lion or bear with a 9mm...

ETA: Maybe he didn't hit it 13 times, but that's just speculation.

Yeah me too. In CO you wouldn't have to. The noise will run them off, if yelling and waving your arms doesn't do it first.

Fired 13 rounds. We don't know if all 13 hit the bear.

13 is an unlucky number !!! 12 would have killed it.

I don't know about you, but last time I checked the AK-47 is a 7.62x39, and the 74 is the 5.45...

Should have used 7.62x39 brown bear ammo. That's why they call it such.

This is exactly my hope.

Then there is always the random meth-head hiding out in the mountains that you might need more than 13rds for...

So when does Sharpton get on CNN to denounce this as a racist white man shooting an unarmed teenage brown bear?

That is very true, and why I carry my EDC rig while hiking/camping, just like I do everywhere else. As has been said many other times in other threads, I'm always more concerned about the 2 legged threats than the 4 legged ones, at least in CO.

I always figured I would be more likely to shoot a dog while walking my dogs or with my son.
just this last Saturday I had the 2 dogs and my almost 2 yo son on a walk. A little all black chihuahua came out of nowhere barking and snarling. No collar, no leash, no owner. My little lhasa apso started barking, little chiuaha came in running and met the toe of my boot and ran off. My english setter was yanking me cause he hates any type of confrontation and my son didn't have a clue what was going on.
luckily the dog ran off after that. Had it been a large dog it probably wouldn't be here today.

You must have small friends if a baby black bear can pull them out of a tent! [Coffee]

I'm surprised that this Alaskan didn't have a big ole' revolver sidearm with him, while out hiking in bear country!?!? I love my AK-74 rifles!

A Remington Nylon 66 (.22lr) may have saved my life once when I lived in Alaska... I was stoopid and left the "bear protection" (Mossberg 500 loaded with alternating 00 buck & slugs) in the Avon (Zodiac clone) I went ashore in... it was ~100yd away from me when a grizzly came out of the woods onto the beach- about 50yds away from me- but I had that Nylon 66 in my hands... fired a few rounds near him, and he decided to go back into the woods after hearing the ruckus...

needless to say, the Mossberg was always with me when I was ashore after that!
(I was about 14yo at the time- and carrying 2 firearms by myself... oh the horror!)
