Is it illegal to drop a letter in someone's mailbox? I need to drop off my rent to my landlord, in case they ain't home will that be an option? Or should i just tape it to their door?

They don't have a drop box? Call ahead and see what they would prefer.

Mailing it to them, or deliver in person.

So when my neighbors mail is dropped in my box and I walk it down the street and put it in theirs that is illegal???

Cause I do it every week.

I never turned in rent late, not going to risk it for USPS, they've lost my packages before. I think I will tape it on their door if they are not there.

Looks like that's your situation now. If someone takes it, wind or rain remove it from their door, then what.

technically you're supposed to give it back to the carrier who will then re deliver it.

Technically it is illegal, although it's rarely enforced unless someone actually complains to a Postal Inspector. If they have a slot in their door or wall for mail, that drops inside the house and doesn't count. Or, you could slide the envelope under their door, or leave it between the inner and outer door. Call your landlord for instructions if you want. Most lease agreements give you a grace period of 2-5 days as well.

AH MEN to that. Pay on time eliminates the need to ask someone on the internet for LEGAL advice.

CAN I PARK IN A NO PARKING ZONE, IF I'M ONLY DROPPING OFF SOMETHING?

Going 56mph in a 55mph zone is illegal also. Look around the tree in front of you and you'll see a forest. And don't you dare acquire a high capacity mag in Colorado ...it is after July 1st you know!

Wish you were my renter, I'm my lease they have until the 4th until its late and they always take advantage of this loophole. I could careless how I received the rent check,so long as it isn't late and doesn't bounce

Why don't you ask the landlord if there is a secure location you can leave the rent other than a mailbox.

here is what you do. get a battery powered circular saw, go to their front door. set the blade depth to max. plunge cut a hole. now you will allways have a place to slide the rent check into their house.

And then deduct the improvement from your rent.

I had this happen just last month, renters have put their check in an envelope in my mailbox for years. We got a new carrier and when he saw the envelope he left a notice of postage due. Unfrekinbeleivable! I put a dollar bill in the box so that he would have to make change and leave it. No big deal to me just kind of chickenshit.

Postal carriers do not carry money OR make change, at least no in NoCo. Ours will knock on the door and suggest adding another stamp, just in case.

The street and some of peoples back yards belong to the town / city and utilities have right of way. Unless you're in a rural area.
But enough of semantics and property rights.
My question is did the op deliver, or now late on payment;)

I used to drop off mail in the mailbox. I was most worried about someone seeing me, then stealing the check. Putting mail into a mailbox is not tampering.

I don't understand why longbow's mail carrier left a postage due notice. There was something in the mailbox, with no stamp, addressed to the location it was at. The post office doesn't deliver things without stamps, so it couldn't have been them. I don't get why they would charge for a service they didn't perform.

It was a business size envelope with just my first name on it. My renter is just a few houses down the road and it was just easier. I agree that it should be none of their business since they did not deliver. We have done this for years with no problems, no biggie for me just adding my .02 worth to the thread.

So at work I have to maintain all the boxes and locks but they wont give me a master key like they have. So when I show up to replace a mail lock I usually rip it open destroying the old one in the process. The carriers have threatened to have me arrested before for doing what im legally required to do.

My dad has left mailbox unchecked for nearly a month, there were enough paper in it to make a book, and the mailman said nothing about it, how come yours charge you a bill? Did the renter left the flag thingy up?

The purpose of the regulation is to prevent private mail delivery services from operating in competition to the USPS.

I don't know why he billed me, but he did......honest. Maybe it was a conspiracy to scam me out of 47 cents and I willingly paid without question. Maybe if I went down and got loud with em they would give it up....or they could go postal for all I know! As stated a couple pages back I was under the impression that it was my box to use as I please but a quick search tells me that it's not even mine. I hope you got your rent paid and things are good.

A quick search revealed these, postal reg 1.3 probably applies to me......hell I don't know.

My renters are usually late with payment and will drop it off in the milk delivery box on the front porch. Once, they dropped it off late Monday night, the milk delivery comes on Tuesday morning, and it happened to be the week the milk bill comes. The milk delivery guy took the envelope with the rent thinking it was my payment and ripped off the bottom stub of my bill. He returned the opened rent envelope with check and bill stub the next day.

Just call the landlord and ask them where they would like for you to leave it.

Will not be the first time. Unless you have helicopters, APC's and other entry toys, i doubt i'd be impressed.

FWIW: being prior .mil it's always advantageous to have "friends" in legal, medical and payroll.
