So awhile back I put up my post where I was looking for a new dog for the family. And as you all know it turned into a big debate about dogs from the Pound or Humane Society being either the best or worst dogs. So with that said what was the best dog you ever had. Breed, where you got him or how he was the better then any other dog you've ever had? I will start My best dog is a chocolate lab mix and he is loyal super friendly and is always happy to see me even when I'm in a bad mood and he's the best trained dog I've had.(trained myself) . I got him from the Human Society when he was 2 months old.
My current 10 year old GSD/Akita mix, Bear (yeah, cliche name, but my brother was the one that named him, at age 15) we got from some Puppy Rescue place about 10 years back. He's the most laid back, friendly, yet protective dog (seriously, he loves girls, not a big fan of guys he doesn't know). Plus he's loyal, and epitomizes "man's best friend." Always good to make my bad days seem much much better. The new vet we took him to said he seems like a 7 year old, not a 10 year old.

My current buddy Wisco.
Pure bred Saint.
I got him 6 yrs ago from a shelter in Kansas. He was beat to shit!! Seriously. His pervious owner got a year for animal cruelty. D-bag.
He is an awesome family dog and has become protective of our kids since they were born.
Will no doubt own another Saint!!

The best dog I ever had was my boxer, Mollie, that I got at the Dumb Friends League. She was extremely intelligent, very friendly with people (when she knew it was OK based on our family members reaction to them), would put herself in the way of anything she thought could be a threat to any of her family, and always was my shadow. We had to make the very tough decision to put her down when she developed health issues later in life. It was like she knew it was time and she let us know by wanting to sleep in the closet or corner of a room away from anyone - she was always by one of us at all times before this. Toughest damn decision I ever had to make; cried like a baby that day, and I still tear up when I start thinking about her [Cry] (as does my wife who I thought was going to kill me the day I brought Mollie home). I've had dogs all my life, and she is the one that I'd pick if I had to choose only ever having only one of any of them.
My son thought she should have his Bronco's hat on since she was intently watching the game...

My god parents had a Saint while I was growing up- the biggest cuddler ever! I love saints, I think it's impossible for them to be bad dogs- Cujo should have been a poodle, not a saint. [Beer]

That's Tyson. We got him 4 years ago from the Boulder Humane Society. He's super protective of my kid and wife, keeps his mouth shut unless someone rubs him the wrong way.
He's the first pet that I've had that I can't imagine losing.

This is Layla, she is yellow lab / Australian cattle dog. Best dog ever. Just a sweet as can be, quiet, yet the most protective dog that I have ever seen. Every time I come home she is ecstatic to see me and is just the most fun loving dog I have ever known. We have had dogs all my life and none were as naturally well behaved and good hearted as she is.

Stella was one of those once-in-a-lifetime dogs. We got her when she was 6 and she was my constant, loyal and ever faithful companion for the next 10 years. Stella was larger than life and I'm afraid I'll dishonor her memory if I try to describe her in words.
This is her (us) in Aug of 2010 while we were having to give her fluids every day. She was in the early stages of kidney failure due to old age.
Stella was my friend and I miss her terribly.

One of my favorite pictures. My wife commissioned a portrait of Stella using this picture from an artist in Golden several years ago. It's one of my most prized possessions.

All of them. Each had their own personalities, each had their distinctive protection style. All of them over the years were eventually put down from old age or sickness. There was a dane shepard mix, shadow. quietest dog and a beta. However where ever the kid went in her walker she was always doing figure 8's around her. Someone came close, she got between the kid and "person" without thinking.
All our dogs except the most current ones were trained to go up on a specific non aggressive word.

Best Dog to Date. Savana, purebread chessie that wasn't paper since the owner didn't want to release them. I was fine with it as I got a pup for $250 when they usually go for $800-$1000. Both her parents were strong hunters. I got her at 6 weeks and it was game on ever since. First water duck retrieve at 3.5 months and flushed and retrieved her first pheasant at 4 months. By the end of the first season she had over 100 water retrieves and was only 6 months old. Dog has a killer nose for a retriever, I haven't lost a duck in 3 season with her, follows hand signals, will dive under the water after ducks that dive on her, and is killer in the cold down to single digits. All you could want in a hunting dog. Then the best part she is about the friendliest chessie you will ever meet. She doesn't have the territorial problem that most chessies have. Since she was a puppy she has always had a seperete set of standards for kids and adults. Kids can tug, poke, prod, and lay on her and she doesn't care and just copes with it, adults don't get away with it. Been nice to always trust her around infants. Best of both worlds, people that only see her around the house are stunned to see her hunt as it is night and day difference. She goes from laid back to extremely intense. Going to be hard letting this one go in a few years.

I love every dog I've ever had for all kinds of different reasons! Here are a few of my best friend Little Momma. She's an 11 year old min pin and she weighs in at a hefty 6 lbs. We rescued her from a puppy mill when she was 6 and she has followed me everywhere I go ever since. She's sitting in my lap as I type and I can't imagine life without her, although I know it will go on. She idolizes me, and I adore her.

Good looking pup right there. Pretty straight hair for a chessie. Have to love the way they hunt eh.
I've had some great 4-legged friends over the years. My most loyal was a dog named "Teddy" when I was a boy. Wish I had pictures handy. This is our German Shepherd/Aussie mix Fenix. He's definitely a good dog. It was very hard when my youngest son started walking. Fenix would knock him down constantly. It was hard for him to learn "sharing" the space.

This is CJ 3/4 yellow lab and 1/4 golden retriever. My once in a lifetime dog as BG would put it. He turns 13 on Veterans Day. He's been worked hard, played hard and loved to pieces. His hips are getting weak and his farts are getting nastier.

Black and white one is Isis and was actually my first dog, we got her in Feb 2007 at 8 weeks old. The red and white one is Remington who we got in March 2012 from the local husky rescue at 1 year old. My mom only liked cats, my dad really didn't like pets at all since you had to do some work to keep them and when I was 5 I was attacked by a german shepard so I was actually scared around dogs until I was about 15. Now, I can't imagine not having them, and I know I'm going to have a hard time when one of them goes.

The hockey trio from left to right Zamboni,Puck and Stanley. Zamboni and Stanley are gone but Puck is still kicking. Zamboni was by far the best dog I have had or seen. I picked her up from a breeder in Loveland, when I went to pick out a pup the breeder let all the yellow labs into and room and she came over and set down on my feet. The breeder said there is your dog so home she went. I took her to work everyday and she would just hangout by the front door waiting for customers to come in. Hell we had customers that would stop by just to see her and wouldn't even buy anything. You could hold a hamburger down and tell her just a nibble and she would pull and onion out and eat it.

Bruno was a Greyhound/Pit mix. I had him since he was a 5 week old pup. My wife was volunteering at DDFL at the time, and there was this 1 little guy who needed to be fostered. He wasn't even in the house for an hour and he decided he liked it, and was going to stay. And he decided that he was mine, and from that point on he was. My wife was just as attached to him as I was. We had him longer than we'd had our kids, hell, he was one of our kids. If we were OK with someone being around, so was he. If we weren't, he knew it. But we could trust him with our kids implicitly. If they did something he didn't like, pulled or poked or whatever, he'd just get up and walk off. When I was home, wherever I was, so was he. I lost him last November, thankfully just before I was about to deploy so at least I was there with him at the end. Damn, I miss him.

I have only had GSDs my whole life so I am kind of biased. However I love pretty much all dogs. As long as you give them food, water, shelter, and love you will receive all you need from a dog 10 fold.

The one on the left was used as a "breeder" Shih tzu`s bring money. She had 4 litters by time she was 2 and"thrown away" after she no langer was productive. She was brought to us..pregnant,she had 5 the little guy was the only survivor.. they`re my buddies. I wouldn`t take anything for them...32109
All of them.
That.
I do a four mile hike each afternoon over a local trail here and see a number of dogs each day that I've never met before. I don't recall meeting too many of those dogs that I wouldn't be happy to have as my own. Their owners are a different story...

Sasha. She was a Cairn Terrier mixed with who knows what that I got from a free litter when she was just 10 weeks old. Intelligent, funny, loving, etc, etc. I had to put her down just a couple months shy of 15 years old. I held her in my arms and talked to her while she was put to sleep...cried like a baby. Then I had to go home and try to explain to my 6 and 3 year old kids where Sasha was. I miss her but have 2 other dogs now to keep us company.

Buddy Blue, wife gave him to me Valentines day 2003. Can't name an instance he ever let me down. Whatever job I have given him he has performed, tirelessly, willingly and well. For the last three years his job has been to protect and be companion to my wife(serious medical issues and multiple surgeries). We live in the country, I work long hours and often travel. I don't think I can ever pay him what he is worth.

My old friend Bug. She was a lab/cocker mix. She was Intelligent, funny, loving there is nothing that dog would not have done for our family. She had the biggest heart I have ever seen and she gave everything she had for her family every day of her life. A truly special friend that will always be missed.
What stands out the most is my family dog when I was a kid. I lived in a house that resembled a 19th century plantation house on top of a hill. She was always there on the front patio between the two center pilers when I left and when I came home standing guard with no fences, chains, or anything to contain her. She was the most obedient dog I have ever known and she did everything asked of her with no hesitation. Many years later she was old and was pretty limited because of arthritis.

Not long before we had her put down, she performed her last duty. I was riding my bike on the road and two Doberman's were coming after me. She came down the hill faster then any dog I had ever seen and chased both dogs off with their tail between their legs. She hobbled back up the hill and sat down in her usual spot. She was a German Shepherd/Collie mix; my parents got her as a puppy a year before I was born. I guess it was two or three months later she wasn't there when I came home from school, and I found out she had been put down. It was a pretty hard time for the family; I still feel for my mom because she had to make the decision and do it on her own.
