I saw a $699 WASR at Liberty Arms in Fort Collins, I actually haven't seen that price for a while on WASR recently, people seem to mark them up at $1000-ish.

And to think they were $289 (and less) new. The SAR series that was before the Wild Ass Shooting Rifle were as low as $179. The SAR series were a little better than the WASR IMO.[Flower]

Bought my WASR underfolder waaay back in 07 for 389.00.
Of course I recall picking up a NIB Norinco with all the accessories at "The Gun Room" when it was at 10th and Broadway in 82ish for 179.00.
Went back a couple weeks later and picked up a HK91 for 799.00.
All my friends thought I was nuts.

I bought a 5-pack of SAR2s direct from Century in 2001 to get the special $169ea price for the bundle. Free shipping back then on orders o er $500.

I like all things about them except no chrome lined barrels, in comparsion Chinese AKs offers everything Yugos do but with chrome lined barrel. I wish they can still be imported tho. I have made up my mind and started saving up for a Chinese AK with underfolder if i can find one next year after i finish my degree.

Can't say that chrome lined barrel ranks high in my selection standards/criteria. I think I have 1 rifle in my selection that has a full chrome bore.

Depend on what ammo you shoot, I still have shit tons of ccorrosive Yugo ammo in a can, would be silly to not have a chrome lined barrel, plus i plan to move some where near the sea if i can.

There's a polytech spiker on theakforum for around 1350 as well as a mak90 underfolder for pretty reasonable too (reasonable for today's standards haha) either way I think chrome lining is a little over rated in a dry climate like colorado but to each their own. Chinese ak's are pretty decent too but in today's market you're probably going to pay a little more than a pap or a wasr. The point of my original post in this thread was (in my opinion) why would anyone buy a wasr over an O-PAP for the same price.

I don't know about that.. all I have shot through my non-chromed 74 is russian/bulgarian which is corrosive and haven't had an issue. Camped out at Pawnee, didn't even clean it for 3 days and no issues. If you live in the south east along the coast and are dealing with salty sea air maybe it's an issue.. but then again just run some water through the damn thing and quit being a lazy ass.

Did you check barrel for pitting? I prefer the Russian trick to pee in the barrel.

I got the point of your original post, but I'm very much set on getting an "over-priced" Ak in the future. I'd pay even more extra if you have something cool by then.

Not just a trick they were literally taught that according to a friend of mine that's a former Ukrainian spetsnaz I personally prefer windex if I'm worried. But as long as you clean your ak after shooting then you don't have to worry about rusting bores and pitting

Some how folks on AK Files (not Ak forum) have pitting problems very often, most of them are in TX or FL, maybe that's why.

Yeah it's way more humid down there just ask zteknik how it was when he lived in upstate New York

Humid or not.. you aren't going to get pitting after a day of shooting if you clean your rifle.. When I get home I just field strip it, turn on the bathtub faucet and put the chamber underneath. My only problem has been the large amount of carbon that builds up inside the flash hider and on the end of the barrel, that stuff is hard to get out.

Back to WASRs.. They had 2 of them on consignment last year at Gunsport in Boulder when I was in there looking one weekend.. I think they wanted around $800 or so firm.. needless to say I didn't pick one up but they were gone a week later so someone did..

No doubt, but even so with eastern humidity I never had a problem with pitted bores.Normaly I would just run a patch down the bbl with some bore cleaner and call it good until I get a chance to fully clean it which could be a month or so.

Try Ballistol. German made that just to clean corrsive ammo stuff(I think).

One of my feed store customers was just telling me about ballistol today he sells it I think next time I'm there I'm going to buy a bottle of the liquid (has aerosol too) but he uses it on his 74's with great effect

I shoot corrosive only through my Mosin and have always used Windex. Will probably do the same with my 74.. if I ever finish it.. hint hint/nudge/wink/wink. Still think I'll look for some of that Ballistol.

Back on topic--- The last price I saw on a WASR before I escaped NY was $800 and even at that price they were flying off the shelf. So $699 plus a few bucks for fees and tax is a pretty good deal in todays market.
I wonder if it's still there??

699$ is still way to high, give it some time prices are dropping big time. No one has money and gun shops are flooded with product right now.

When did you escape NY? If it was a few years ago, then NY has insane gun prices. I didn't see any gun shop when i was there.

That's because you were in the city. A lot of places the wed after Cuomo signed the SAFE act tuesday nigh,t were literally closed down. Or their inventory removed for out of state sales. Fingerprinting to buy ammo[Bang]

The furthest I went "out" of the city was Bronx.

Da bronx is a Borough not a different city. It's all NYC, Brooklyn , Manhattan, Staten Island, the Bronx & Queens are called the 5 Borough's

YOU will never see a gun store within the NYC area.

As far as Windex goes.. everything I have found on the web tells me that simply rinsing the barrel and gas system parts out with water is just as effective as any other method and that the ammonia (which is a base and is corrosive on it's own) in the windex can actually have detrimental effects.

Additional reading on cleaning after shooting corrosive ammo tells me that oil/solvent based cleaners do not remove or break down salts, only water based cleaners do and in addition there is no advantage to additional ingredients added to the water.

My method that is working so far (no sign anywhere of any corrosion happening) is field strip rifle, place chamber under bathtub faucet, turn on faucet and let it run for a minute or two moving it to also running the gasblock under the faucet. Once it is flushed out I then wipe everything down with CLP and run a boresnake through it. My biggest problem has been cleaning out the carbon build up in the flash hider and on the muzzle, so far I have been using the water and a scouring pad while I have it in the shower but I am going to try a couple different carbon removers that are out there. I am also pondering coating the end of the muzzle and inside the flash hider with anti-seize to see if the stuff will just wipe off in the future.

warm soapy water is your friend. Worrying about the muzzle and f/hider is an exercise in futility. Never sieze, under extreme heat has a tendency to crystalize. It's one of the reasons most is not all techs / mechanics / wrenches know not to use nz on the bottom portion of a spark plug before installing. IIRC its HD Tech Tip 18-337??

A little oil (your choice) on the threads helps with removal of buildup. However you do more to throw POI, taking on and off then you would to leave it alone. Just follow your process and all is good.
