Not sure if you guys heard the news this weekend, but it went national... An ice cave up at Mt Hood, OR collapsed and killed a 25 year old snowboarder from Pine, CO, Collin Backowski. I heard the news waking up on Sunday that a snowboarder from CO had been buried in an ice cave collapse in Oregon and the rescue efforts were underway. When I heard the name my heart sank. He and my brother grew up and played soccer together. When I heard that they had recovered the body I felt so awful for not only his family, but the dozens and dozens of mutual friends he and I had that I know were very close to him- closer than I was. I always remembered how fun, friendly, and genuine he was. He was a very talented snowboarder and soccer player. The silver lining, I guess, would be that he died doing what he loved. Just another scary reminder that life is short and can end suddenly. RIP Collin. :(
