JOHNSTOWN — The largest firearms facility in Colorado if not the country could be coming to a commercial development near the interchange of Interstate 25 and U.S. Highway 34.

The Johnstown Town Council on Monday approved plans to build the Liberty Arms Institute in the 2534 commercial area, which sits north of the Thompson Crossing subdivision.

Plans for the 100,000-square-foot building call for five underground firing ranges catering to shooters of pistols and rifles. The building also would have a gun store, restaurant and classroom space for firearms instruction.

The approval came despite complaints from numerous Thompson Crossing residents, who said the facility would be too close to their neighborhood.

Residents said they did not oppose firearms and their proper use, but they have concerns about how noise and traffic from the facility would impact them.

Jim French, who has spearheaded opposition to the proposal, said he worries more about would happen outside the building than inside, which would be highly secured.

A stray bullet from “something foolish” happening in the parking lot is a real concern, he said.

“Firearms are inherently dangerous,” French said. “This business is inherently dangerous no matter what some people say.”

The council’s chamber was packed for the hearing, with the majority of those present opposed to the proposal.

Supporters said the facility is needed to meet the demand for safe places to learn about firearms and to shoot.

Thompson Crossing resident Bruce Weber said the facility would be well managed.

“I have no concerns; I welcome this project,” he said.

Council members said they were torn about the project and understood neighbors’ concerns about traffic, air quality and noise.

But the plans submitted by the developer and business, USA Liberty Arms of Fort Collins, would address those concerns, said Mayor pro tem Gary Lebsack.

“I believe they can keep the noise out of your homes,” he said.

The approval came with several conditions, including independent testing for noise. The main entrance to the facility also must be moved from Thompson Parkway to Ronald Reagan Boulevard.

The company also has to pull a building permit for the project, which is expected to cost $15 million to $18 million to build, within a year.

Mayor Mark Romanowski, who was the only council member to vote against the project, said opposition to the proposal by neighbors could not be ignored. Most of those supporting the idea live elsewhere, he said.

“I think the residents have spoken loud and clear: No — not in my back yard,” Romanowski said.

Good and bad in my opinion. Bringing more gun money into a state that doesn't support guns. Kind of negates Magpuls (and others) stance on the issue. The Governor will use this to say "see, our guns laws did not prevent more business here"

I'm confused... So we should all just stop living here, stop buying and selling guns here, stop hunting, stop shooting and just move on? Is it not enough for the Independence Institute's lawsuit and the recall campaigns? Can we at least wait and see what 2014 elections hold?

By moving to other states and sending business away we are giving them exactly what they want, complete control of the state. We actually need to be trying to work in the other sdirection, get pro gun people to move to the state so we have more voting power and push them bastards out. If we keep running from them we will eventually be pushed into the ocean or one state that they cant take. With only one state what kind of voting power do you think you will have.

In other words, making ourselves the new New Jersey.

The more people that buy, use, and get educated about firearms the better. Now lets just hope it is reasonably priced to go there.

After reading the article it seemed that the majority of people, according to the news, was against it....sooooo, is it still going to go forward?

Majority of the people who showed up to protest were against it. Sounds like the people who were fine with it didn't bother to show up.

Not enough market for it. There are already 3 indoor ranges within 20 miles of there; 1 public, 2 private. LE will not buy into it as there are already plans moving forward for a mult-agency training/shooting complex in the county. Although the idea is nice, it wont happen...not at $15 mill.

There is a market for a reasonably priced option for a range. Also, it is not only a range, but also a gun store, restaurant and classroom space.

There's a real shortage of those in the area too...perhaps we should get more NRA instructors in the area to accomidate.

As far as "reasonably priced"- indoor ranges are very expensive to operate and maintain, even more so as health regulations increase. Getting to shoot in a climate controled, staffed facility is a luxury.

Jim French - spearheaded opposition.

Why is it that everything related to that country sucks?

What countRy? French is a dick. so are the bogus claims of "Noise & traffic" you fukin idiots live across the street from CENTERRA AND OUTLET MALLS. Might as well move near DIA and start complaining about the noise[Bang]

For those saying that this won't happen do you know what 'small shops' like Jensen Arms pull in monthly with a hole-in-the wall facility from the 60's and the worst customer service out of any retail establishment in the county? They gross enough in a year (easily) to pay for this facility and the net levels are solid too since people don't haggle they just come in and pay whatever price tag is on it if it's in stock. That will come into play for financing and such and considering the amount of revenue a massive business of this scale would generate I say it's highly likely and with the Johnston approval I think some will be amazed at how quickly this happens.

They do like Gun World in Phx does / did and the other indoor ranges in CO , run it like a health club they up front "LOW" initiation fees will be a solid line of revenue.

Win - Win. No one shoots everyday. If the availability was there with a reasonable yrly fee and low mthly maintenance, i'd consider it. However like the Loveland indoor range it cost 2x more than WCFW. Sure it's outdoors, however, crime never waits for a nice day (C)

If every jurisdiction in Colorado can own and operate one or more golf courses, I would like to know when do we get a recreational facility like this one: http://www.grand-island.com/index.aspx?page=44

Adams County was working on something just north of DIA a couple of years ago and it has since evaporated. Instead, the county drove WHAC out of business with their demands to meet current code.

Apparently the political will just doesn't seem to exist to provide revenue producing recreational facilities for gun nuts, only nutty people whacking little white balls around water drenched, grass carpets.

I wonder how much money the new facility in El Paso County at Ft Carson is losing? I would guess none.
