View Full Version : Okay, I'm An Idiot - Help Me Identify This Barrel

I am an educated and pretty smart guy, but I just pulled a doozy of a stupid stunt.

I was in the market for a cheap AR barrel and I got one off of eBay pretty cheap. The guy advertised it as a Bushmaster barrel and I snatched it up without really looking at the barrel as close as I should have. The auction was closing and I bidded quickly. No excuse, just what happened. Anyway, I received it in the mail today and the dang thing has threads!

Now, I have to figure out what I have. The markings on the end of the barrel are: B MP 5.56 1/9.

What do I have?

The B (for Bushmaster), MP stands for "magnetic particle" tested, 5.56mm caliber, 1/9 indicates twist rate.

It's also missing the barrel extension that's why you see the threads like that. Looks to me like it was someone's botched piston kit build but I'm viewing your pics from my phone right now too!

just toss a barrel extension on and get it headspaced properly, then toss on a new gas block if your going DI. In the end you may have got a killer deal. I would take it to bowers and let Rob set it up.

Let me know if you want to sell it or trade. I do have a brand new barrel sitting on a shelf...

Looks like someone was trying to do a piston setup and might have messed things up. You might want to get BP or Bowers to have a look at it before trying to use it.

Thanks guys! I should have realized that myself, but we have a newborn in the house and sleep seems to be a commodity I'm lacking (that is the excuse I'm going to use anyway!!).

Well, Rob wasn't interested in assisting with this.

My guess is that by the time you buy a barrel extension and pay someone competent to fit and install it, you could probably just buy a barrel ready to go.

Might make a neat project for a beginner gunsmith or someone with some free time and ambition.
