View Full Version : on board bov fuel
I run a powerstroke f250 long bed. Considering on board fuel options. Figured I'd post it here for fun.
Basically I have a 36 gallon tank.
I can add an in bed 36 gallon tank for $200 and tap into my fill neck allowing gravity refill.
I can add a 100 gallon l tank with a pump for $600.
I can add a crossover box for 5gallon cans for $100
I could possibly add a 36 gallon tank from a f450 but id have to relocate the spare
I use my bed for general contracting and this is my bov. My generator is diesel also
Opinions?
For me what would make sense would be the in bed tank and a pump. For one if you have a diesel generator you can fill it via the pump.meaning an external pump like some guys have to refill heavy equipment. You could also tap in to the regular fuel tanks as well so you don't have to get out and fill your own truck.
Some of the tanks I have seen take up about as much space as a tuck toolbox that goes across the back wall of the bed by the rear window.

I would look at the F450 tank swap, there are lots of spare mounting options, and the bed tank with the pump.
Good thing I am spending your money :)
I looked at getting a spare tank for my V10 F250 but the costs were enormous.
Thank you for posting up other options for me, the only issue I have with a bed mount tank is the loss of bed space.
Why swap one 36 gallon tank for another 36 gallon tank? I'm not tracking.

I believe it would be in addition to his factory tank.
When I get time ill add some pics.
One of my issues with the 100 gallon L tank is the weight. Along with bed loss. But it'd give me 2k miles of range.

I'm not a scientist by any stretch but wouldn't that kind of added weight have a serious effect on MPG ?

A little. If it is anything like my truck 800 lbs in the bed will not change the highway MPG by much as long as it is not in the wind.

That is true. And I have been up to the summit about 20 times in the last month. But not with my truck.[Flower]
I have been thinking a lot about this for my jeep and I came up with a little different plan. Getting the 100 gallon tank is going to take a significant amount of space from your bed so if you are using it for work eventually is is going to be a pain in the ass and will need to be unloaded for something. I think that it would be easier to buy a little trailer with a tank and you could build your generator and whatever else you wanted to into it. Then keep the tank full but use it for a refill in your truck every so often and hook up to it and top it off afterwards.
I want to build mine to have my generator, 150 gallons of gas and a dirtbike all packed together in a real travel ready setup. That way it is always good to go, I don't have to take the time to load anything, and I don't have to carry it all around with me. Also I plan to use it as my rig for going hunting so I am trying to find a little enclosed trailer so that I can pack all my hunting tents and camp gear in there too. I could make a round trip to hunting camp without ever hitting a gas station. Then stack up some fuel points on the old king soopers card and top it off for cheap when I get back.
So as long as you had a place to park a little trailer, I think that it would save time, money and heartache in the long run all while increasing the capabilities beyond the options that you are currently looking at.
Its certainly an option but not a good one for me. Little trailers and long wheel base means you can't back it for anything. Id also have 8ft of empty space.
Want to buy a converted s10 pickup bed trailer? Ugly is an understatement and you need a tetnis shot but ill sell it cheap
