Since the DE is made by Colt and looks like a 1911, is it essentially a beefed-up 1911? Same design, takedown, etc.?
Yep. Just a 1911 in 10mm. I don't recall anything "beefed up" about the design. But, it's been a lot of years since I was around one.
Nothing beefed up about it. Just a regular old 1911 in 10mm.

That I don't have one of.....

Heavier recoil spring, slightly different feed ramp angle, relief cut above slide stop and a magazine modified for the 10 mm cartridge. And of course the barrel and chamber size.

Check out the big brain on the trunk monkey! Early Delta's did not have the relief cut above the slide stop and were prone to cracking, hence the relief cut. The extractor for a 10mm is different and if memory serves me correct the correct recoil spring is 22# on a full size.
Kimber makes a great one, ramped barrel so it can shoot higher power in a supported chamber unlike the DE. Of course I do have a couple of genuine Colt DE magazines!

I cry myself to sleep because I don't have one of these beauties.
Not having a Delta kept me awake for many nights until Paul rescued me. I still need to get it to a smith to do a beaver tail and trigger.

No Delta here, but do still have an IMI Javelina in 10mm. Wish it was the longslide version, but beggars can't be choosers. I'll have to find a picture for you all to drool over. The stainless with handmade elkhorn grips looks pretty sharp.

underwood ammo states not to use their 10mm ammo in the Delta Elite. Is that because it's not "beefed up" in any way?

It isn't a fully supported chamber. I haven't seen one in person to know what they mean by it, but it's expansion needs to be contained since it is at full SAAMI specs and very high pressure. You could get a Delta Elite and swap a better barrel into it, but would likely take someone with skill to mill out the room for the ramp, etc.

Installing a ramped barrel is a fairly straightforward process but it is a precise process.

Bert at BP Tactical is your go to man for smithing.
Give him a call on what parts to order and take it to him for the work. He can also hand checker the front strap.

I swapped in a 6" Nowlin to my Kimber 10mm. If anyone wants the 5" Kimber supported and ramped barrel to fit their DE let me know. Not trying to sell it, but it is just sitting in my parts drawer along with tons of other 1911 parts.
I can't seem to convince myself to modify the Delta, even though I know I would like it if I did. I have a Glock 29 and a new gen 4 G20, I seem to end up carrying one of them and the Colt just sits there. I need to talk to Bert about the cost involved and what mods I should do. Definitely need the beavertail because every 1911 I have ever shot gave me hammer bite in government configuration, but beyond that not sure.

This. His work is amazing.

I'm curious to see how long it will take someone to make a 10mm barrel for the Glock 41. Might be worth getting then.
