Ok, so, some of you know that my compurernhas acted upma few times in the last year... Today, I decided to try to make a backup of everything. It was pretty much literally 3 seconds into making back up discs when the computer blue screened, and then went to a black screen. It took about another ten seconds for the start up screen (the one where you can push the f keys) to come up, then it took me to the boot menu screen... It says: [ 1: Harddisc] is failed

Fuck..... Now I have to drive to Amarillo to buy a decent computer, or harddrive...

1) your computer luck seriously sucks
2) for the computer to post isn't a matter of the hard drive, it's the memory or even the motherboard (sorry I forget which). If you have trouble shooted the memory than I'd suspect the motherboard, in which case I suggest just buying a cheapo dell and forget about everything else.

Once you have the other computer, it should be simple enough to install your current hd in there as an extra, and ice you clean it up a bit you can make it your backup drive.

Remove the old hard drive, buy a new one, install it, get it set up. Put the old drive in the anti static bag from the new one, and stick it in the freezer overnight. The platters will contract in the colder temperatures and could get you enough time transfer the data over to the new one via a USB adapter.

I second Ridge, I did the freezer on an older drive that was clicking and i got about 20 minutes until the clicks started again.

Macs don't use hard drives? Seriously, just had a HD die too. At least they're cheap. My PITA is setting up my itunes again. I was good backing up after the last crash (for about 3 months). Then it happened again.

...but when an SSD does fail, the failure is total and complete. No sticking it in the freezer. ;-)

We've gone through several at work, particularly on Macbook Air models.

Personally, I don't think any company is making a decent conventional HDD these days. Quality seems to be pretty poor across the board.

As was mentioned earlier, POST is handled by the BIOS on the motherboard. All of my home systems, other than the home server, are using SSDs as boot drives. POST takes much longer than bootup from the SSD into Windows 7.

SSD is the way to go just for the speed alone.

I'm sure there is some software that works the same for windows but I will say the "time machine" back ups for the Mac OS is AWESOME.

back ups at a regular interval with easy set up and seemless operation .. hell I just looked up and mine is backing up at this moment.

It has saved my butt once when my HD randomly went wacked on my last machine and saved the macs at my office twice when the HD's died ( two different machines) feels like it takes FOREVER to restore from back up( at least when it's almost 500GB in size) but it's worth every second when ya need it.
