View Full Version : Probably a stupid question.
Reloaded some .223 VMax 55 gn to the COAL recommended in the Hornady manual (2.250). When I try to push the bolt home I get a bit of resistance at the end. When I remove the round there's a scratch on just one small part of the bullet near the ogive.
Is the bullet going into the lands? I figured I would see marks all around the ogive instead of just on one small part if it was seated too long. I had to load these at 2.220 to get them to chamber without resistance.
load one to mag length with out powder then slam it home see what the bullet setback is. with an ar you run out of mag length before you hit lands most of the time. what kind of dies? is your die bumping the shoulder back enough
Sorry, this is a Remington 700 should have said that earlier. Cases fit fine, I can drop them in and out easily. If I drop the round in, it doesn't plunk in and it won't fall out. These were full length sized too on Forster dies.
ahhh flip a flat base projectile backwards and barely seat it then slowly chamber it it will show you roughly where the lands are. the flat base wont get stuck like the ogive

I load all my VMAX to 2.220
You'll be fine.
Matter of fact... I just looked... I have a picture of my last 55gr. VMAX load in a set of calipers. 2.222"
That's not a safe assumption. Different guns can have widely varying amounts of freebore. The OP needs to determine the distance from the bolt face to the lands.
