I'm flying to San Diego(I had no choice about going) to attend a work conference until Wednesday. I obviously can't take my weapon and can't fly with a knife but I can take a bright flashlight... worth doing or should I just buy a cheapo knife when I'm there and ship it back to CO before I return?
Some of the conference activities involve late dinners so I'll have to walk back to the hotel when it's darker out(with other people from my office but they're not very aware). The walk is only a couple blocks but I don't like going anywhere around here without at least a knife and California is way more messed up than Colorado... for now.
California is 100% crime free due to their awesome laws, didn't you get the memo?

GL buying a knife. You have numerous tools at your disposal. A nice sharp pencil or solid pen works, or snag one of the forks from any restaurant, inconspicuous, and OOPS didn't know i had it. Typical CA mentality they would expect.
You do realize that self defense in CA is illegal right? You stab someone trying to take your wallet and you'll be the one in court since you should have given your wallet and called the cops while someone steals your identity.

The San Diego Police are completely corrupt, as is the mayor and town council. If you get picked up and taken in by the police there, expect a beating and macing for no other reason than you questioned "why?" An you will be charged up the butt with crimes that you did not commit and no lawyer in San Diego will help you.
Stay under the radar, if you are in a group you will be OK as long as no one does anything stupid.
Take a solid pen for the flights and the trip... have it in a shirt pocket or on your neckline/collar/button line.
San Diego? Stay away from public restrooms near the beach.....

Rape whistle. Don't forget the rape whistle.
Clearly you need something non lethal and easy to conceal
Might I suggest: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PTAXUYLbFYk

Haha done. I think I've found exactly what I need so we can end the thread.
I was really leaning more towards the flashlight than the knife(causes less issues everywhere) and had considered a pen so thank you all for the advice so far. I will bring a rape whistle and my first stop will be to pick up some pocket sand.

Support colorado, buy colorado pocket sand. Im pretty sure you need a background check for pocket sand in california anyway.
OT: Yeah get a flashlight. Nothing with "tactical" looking features just a maglite
Other then Hawaii, San Diego has some of the best weather you will find this side of the planet...Enjoy!

Two rolls of quarters and couple tube socks. They can't ding you (yet) for carrying cash to feed the parking meters. You can also improvise a slingshot if you have therabands (for exercising on the plane of course) and a rigid frame.

Where are you going to be walking at night? If you're on the West side of I-5, you should be fine with a group of people.

Along with urine and vomit you'll be fine.
Every time I fly I have my handheld light (the kind you can hit somebody with), both for light and as a defense tool as well as a sturdy metal pen, again tool and defense. Not sure of the CA laws, but you may consider picking up some cheap pepper spray from walmart or something when you get there. Keep it with you there, and then either toss it or give it away before coming back. Not the same as a pistol, but hopefully tools to create some space and give time to exit a bad situation.

I fly frequently and that is how I roll. Good Streamlight penlight and a solid point pen. Best you can do these days.
And if you EVER thought about moving to CA, thing again. This was posted this morning listing the new laws being passed by those brilliant representatives in Sacramento. http://www.sacbee.com/2013/08/13/5648252/gun-control-bills-advance-in-california.html#disqus_thread So not only do they want to outlaw any scary black rifles, they now want to ban ANY rifle that can take a detachable mag like a standard 30-06 or 22lr. And of course, you would have to turn in your magazines to the police to aid thier stockpile. I am sure they would welcome a ton of pristine Magpul 20 and 30 round PMags. Keep your Kalifornia! Having said that, I have to fly out to Irvine Monday morning for a customer... how ironic?!
