View Full Version : Rocky Mountain Air Show This Weekend
Bring your wallet, I am calling it an outrage they are charging for this crap. Airshows were always free till a few years ago. Now it's a money grab by the local airports. Heard some of the vendors pulled out this year because they refused to charge $4 for a coke like the airshow officials were requiring.
When they open up Buckley or Peterson AFB and do a real air show with some sort of aerial team then I am there. No Blues or Thunderbirds, why bother?
They're charging now? WTF - how much? I'm definitely going to see the B-24 and B-29, and get some photos and video of them, and any other coolness there. Not too concerned about the "show" part.
i was looking at the prices and then extra $$ for parking. Good thing I can ride my bike there.

I don't care about the shows either, I just want to see the planes.

ALL BAGS, COOLERS, CONTAINERS WILL BE SEARCHED UPON ENTRY. ARRIVING WITHOUT THESE ITEMS WILL SPEED UP THE ADMISSION PROCESS. JEFFERSON COUNTY SHERIFF WILL BE PATROLING THE GROUNDS, INSIDE AND OUTSIDE THE FENCES, WITH K-9 TEAMS. NO WEAPONS ARE ALLOWED.
I am going to assume they are including concealed carry so count me out.
Guess I won't be attending, I thought it was a free fly-in. Looking forward to some pics of Fi-fi though.
If you are looking for photos in the afternoon your best bet is on the south side of the runways, especially closer to Wadsworth where concidentally, you don't have to pay to get in. This airport is totally backwards for decent photos after about 10AM. They really should be doing this at one of the local AFBs or even Front Range.
I have never understood why the US Gov sends the Blue Angels and Thunderbirds along with all sorts of other demo teams across the world to foreign airshows but ignores the taxpayers at home. Hell, we pay for it, show me what I am paying for!

Was going to go w the wife and our son. Fuck it now, not remotely worth the $$$ thy are charging.
Considering that Fifi is the ONLY flying B-29 left in the world, and that I may never get another chance to film a B-29 starting up, I reckon I'll be coughing up the dough. And I seriously doubt I'll be needing a handgun either.
Last year I walked in with a camera bag and a Camelbak on, they didn't stop me or ask me to show anything.

Both the Blue Angels and Thunderbirds seasons were canceled thanks to the sequester...
I heard the Birds are flying again but I have no clue how long till they are show ready ( the sequester bit into preseason practice and these guys have hard safety rules on how much practice they get before they will show)

I will be there, worth it. Tons of fun, this year, they are launching a rocket frm what I understand.
I'm out too. They raised the prices, and now the parking. I took the family last 2 years, and was going to go Saturday, I figured 200 bucks for a day of family fun was a bit much. I though air shows used to be a cheap day of fun. Some friends of the wife posted pictures of it tonight. Not a lot of anything, they called it a bust. Denver is too big a city not to have a decent show.
yeah, I hate the idea of paying after it was free for so many years but I have yet to see a B-29.. I'm going to cough up the $$ and head down there Sunday afternoon.. Read that they are doing a WW2 show with pyro/bomb drops and all that as well. Could care less about the wing walkers and other aerobatic stuff. I don't think the F18 and 16s are there this year either (sequester likely), at least they are not listed.
Well, I went, and turned around and came home. 36 is under construction, the signs for the airport were gone so I had hell finding it, parking was like, 3 miles away, so I said fuck it - I'll go see the bombers in Colorado Springs. They're going to be there Mon, Tues and Wed.

I don't know the details yet, look up Commemorative Air Force for the schedule.

B-29 flies Wed. at 9am and 10:30 am
B-24 flies Wed. at 4pm
I want to get in close because I've got this thing about making videos of planes like this starting up. Not something you get to see very often, especially a B-29. Watching from a distance, that would be like watching porn on a drive-in screen with binoculars from a nearby field.

wont be there, didn't go today, but if it were me, I would just go park somewhere else slightly off the airport and watch from there. on the south, east or west side preferrably.

Round engines have more character and soul than any other engine out there. And startup is when they show it the most.

Yeah, I'm dying to see those giant B-29 props swinging through and those big engines belching!

I live right by the airport. This was the weakest show ever. No jets , no helicopters , nothing but prop planes and not many of those.
A big let down.
Agreed it is weakest show but you have haven't paid attention there are several jets I was over there yesterday at a parking and watched the show.
Any pics from those that did go?

i didn't do that!!
Thanks for posting the vid rondog. I hope you can catch a B29 start.
Hmm, I think that '84 or Starfighter is local. Nice NZ Spit. I saw the B-29 and 24 flying around, thought it was a 17. Didn't think any flew anymore. There is a Mig-17 that you may be able to get a ride in if you offer half-gas or something at that airport. I think someone also had a Corsair over there a while back.

I've been down at Colorado Springs all day, now THIS is the way to see planes like this!!! No crowds of thousands, no parking a mile away, no apron nazis - "sir, we need you to stay behind the rope please", no admission or parking fees, no BULLSHIT! I'm parked about 200 ft. from the B29, got some great vids, waiting now for the B24 to go up.
Think I'll have a cigar while I wait.....
I used to go out to Centennial Airport, go through one of the FBOs and just walk out onto the tarmac and wander around...

You have to be careful doing that.
I work at a shop up at jeffco and two weeks ago I had someone do that and they ended up crossing a runway and it was my ass that got into trouble because I was not "babysitting" them. I figured all the signs that say active runway do not cross was enough.
Yeah, I never wandered from the tie downs, stayed away from the taxiways, let alone the runways.
I can remember when visiting a local airport to look at airplanes or visit FBO's wasn't a problem whatsoever. In fact, it was encouraged.
^ Yep, the idea was if you would stop to look at one, they could get you in one. Worked on me at least..
