View Full Version : Recommendations for Armor to cut down barrel
I have a suppressor on order and now want to look at going to a 14.5" M4 length barrel and pinning the Phantom QD flash hider. Anyone have a recommended armor in the Denver or Colo Springs area they could recommend to do this? Basically want to compare the cost of having my existing 16" DPMS barrel down or buy a Daniels Defense 14.5 barrel. Either way, it would still have the carbine length gas port so I dont see any issues with that. Any of you actually get a 16" cut down that can speak to any accuracy changes? THx!
Update. I did a search before making this post but I searched on "AR cutting barrel" and didn't get any hits. I just found a recent post that was labeled "Threading barrel for silencer" or something close and I think I found what I need. Saw in there a recommendation to go to BP Tactical. Sounds like they can do exactly what I want and very reasonable. Would still like responses for anyone that actually had thiers cut down and any changes in accuracy.
shorter barrell will be more accurate but have slightly less velocity

shorter barrel will be "slightly" more accurate but have way less velocity
Fixed it for you :)
You realize you're only cutting 1.5 inches off.
Why?
I have been very happy with Del-Ton barrels. They are made for them by Wilson and are very accurate. Can get one for $150 or so. You are looking at $100 to cut, thread and pin the FH. If you want to do it, Bert at BP is the guy. I run my suppressor on a 16". The 14.5 with pinned FH just limits you and you are not really gaining anything.

Bert did this for me. Can not see any changes.
Couldn't that adversely affect the pulse with on the gas cycle?

Why Not? personally if i'm running shorter than 16", it's for another SBR.
A 16" with mid-length gas is going to last longer, shoot flatter and faster than a 14.5 with carbine gas. Just is. The only benefit of a shorter barrel is in and out of cars and such. For that, you really need to go shorter to really make it beneficial.

I dont really want to go through the hassle of a "true" SBR, paying another tax stamp and waiting, getting the lower engraved, having to keep it with the upper permantenly etc. I am already going to be replacing the flash hider with a Phantom QD for my suppressor and it doesnt need to come off so shortening the barrel and pinning keeps it at the 16" legal max and provides just that much more swing in the barrel. My DPMS is a 1:9 twist and I normally shoot 55Gr and 62Gr so that if fine but a true M4 barrel is 1:7 like the Daniels Defense. Of course it is about $60 to have my existing barrel cut and crowned and $275 for a replacement barrel so that is why I am looking into it.
