I always have more than enough of all my supplies and rations when camping but I always forget bug sprays. Typically I will use citronella candles and a campfire to keep them away, but what are other great ways to keep these pest away. I am also asking this question bc most people always say they are going to head to the hill for a bug out idea but I am wondering how much bug spray are you taking.
I am sure you all know these pest carry west Nile, malaria and spead other junk too. Now lets hear some cheap old fashion way of keeping the mosquitos off you

Always been told vanilla extract... A dab or two... But never tested this cause for some reason Mosquitos don't like me much

DEET (if it's borderline bad for you it has to work), long sleeves, pants, and start a fire and sit/stand near the smoke- fire ban permitting of course.

And stop stressing about the things mosquitos can spread. Before moving to Colorado I was bitten approximatley 776,122 times and did not contract anything. I'd worry more about lighting in Colorado.

I've always heard a dryer sheet in your pocket works, but never tried it.

I have also heard that rubbing the inside of a banana peel on a bite relieves the itch, but again, never tried it.

Campho-Phenique (sp?) works very well to get rid of the itching of many kind of bites.

And approximatley 750,000 mosquites died as a result of drinking your blood. [ROFL3]

I use Permethrin on my clothes, gear and boots and Deet on exposed skin. 100% DEET might also be on a hat if I am not going to sweat. 20% on the skin. The best combination there is.

Permethrin is good of ticks, bed bugs and other stuff too. http://www.sawyer.com/permFAQ.html

I use the 12 ounce pump

Gin and Tonic...(developed by the British in India)...drink 1 Gallon (50/50 mix) throughout the day starting with breakfast. The Juniper/Quinine blend seems to repel the little buggers really well...especially when it is oozing from you pores.

Simple syrup in a spray bottle works wonders.... [LOL]

I usually use 100% deet.

Otherwise, I just shoot their wings off with my military-grade tactical assault glock

When I was visiting with a friend up in Washington, we'd stun 'em with a cut down canoe paddle, then finish 'em with a 12 gauge loaded with 000 buck, because you could hurt yourself trying to kick 'em to death with steel toed boots...

Damn big mosquitoes up there...

With a half gallon of gin a day I wouldn't know if I got bit.

No kidding. I'm originally from Florida and I have seen more mosquitos (and lightning) in one day then you would see in 100 years here in Colorado.

Let me clarify: this is a survival thread.......most are worried about SHTF and end of the world scenarios but I was just checking to see if people prep against Mosquitos, insects or other pest bc it might be the little thing that throw a wrench in your survival plan.

I only had two bites and my son had a few too but my lady friend had 16 and a few weeks ago when we went she had 14. For some reason they are attracted to her and I would like to make our camping trips more enjoyable for her bc she has a great time and doesn't complain but I know it must be a pita for her

Quick question was she wearing anything that smelled nice or bright in color? I hear those dammed things are attracted to that and it migh be one of the reason.

"Jungle Juice" from REI unless I'm around fly line (DEET will melt fly line).

-and for those who travel, Larium/Mefloquine is not a sure-thing prevention for the ills that mosquitos can cause...(be sure to have air-evac insurance if going to malaria regions....you just might need that ride like I did).

Been through some areas with serious skeeter problems, Minnesota for 3 summers, a couple years in the Philippines, and done some back country stints in yellowstone where to be honest they will pick you up and pack you away. Best thing I have ever done is dress for them. Even in july backpacking and 90 degrees I wear long sleeves and a head net. Hands get bit a little but not bad. Deet for days in the summer will make you sick. Watched it too many times. Ill have to find the link to the plant but there is a purple flower that is sort of cone shaped that grows in the mtns that you crush up and rub on your skin will work better than any store bought repellent out there, what I use most of the time in the back country when I see it. Old time flyfisherman taught me that one.

Whatever the shit in a can the Army passed around worked ok in Ft Hood, but never worked in Ft Polk. Only way to keep mosquitoes off you in Polk was to slice open your buddy's forearm so the blood would attract them away from you. Around here I just keep some cans of Deep Woods Off, citronella candles and some tiki torch oil with repellent in it.
