View Full Version : Heavy duty sewing?
Does anyone know someone who could sew sails off of sailboats? (heavy dacron)? I'm on the verge of putting a 'shade sail' up over a backyard patio and thought that repurposing an actual sail (cut with a new hem) might be more interesting than a simple rectangle of Sunbrella/Weblon/Stamoid. I'd need four hems and four brass grommets installed in the corners... I guess the local shoe repair guy could do it but he tends to take about 10X longer to do anything than his estimate states.
Google "Denver Tent and Awning", there will be about 4 options to choose from.

There's a guy here at the shop that has an upholstery sewing machine if that would work?
I just realized you're out of Boulder (bummer), check these guys out: http://bouldermtnrepair.com/
Call westmarine here in denver. They should have a list of folks around the state.

Do you need it to be professional? If not, you can bring over a swatch to try out on our industrial sewing machine. I don't sew, but my wife likes to.
try pauls custom canvas right off 76 in Denver
Denver Tent wants $591 to stitch it which is about 4X the cost of a used 40' sailboat mainsail - needless to say, this isn't trending the direction I'd hoped...
Davis Tent & Awning - we have two canvas wall tents from them. One was purchased in '03, the other... 1973. I'm not sure what they can do for you, worth a shot tho.

Trust me on this Stu, that is not an industrial machine. Singer, Adler, Tippman, Ferdco, Juki, Pfaff etc are industrial machines. I had an Adler that would do 5/8" of packcloth, foam and polyethelyne or 3/4" of leather. That Sears would shit the bed at 1/4" of leather.
That's why industrial machines are so pricey.

Hey HBAR, if you ever want to part ways with the Adler patch machine, I'm your Huckleberry.
I had an old black Adler patch machine and ran it until I picked up a Claes pitcher. What a beast and I kick myself for selling it.
Yeah, it sure doesn't look very industrial to me. I'm not in the market as I've got a Singer Touch n' Sew 578 that I'm learning to sew on. Someone just gave me a couple boxes of sewing machine parts, so if anyone is knowledgeable enough to help me identify them, please give me a shout. I think they are various kinds of feet.

Well, the offer stands or if you hear of a patch machine in decent shape keep me in mind.
Who makes the "Cowboy"? It looks a lot like a Ferdco Bull.

That's an industrial machine, for sewing BUTTONS ! [ROFL3] That unit is geared for small alteration shops, that don't have a lot of foot traffic.
