The scene in a Carolanne Farms neighborhood this morning resembled one from a movie.
A contractor on his way to work about 7 a.m. stepped outside his home, pressed the button on his key fob to unlock his truck’s door.
Then, boom.
An explosion hurled parts of the truck into neighbors’ yards. The windshield landed in the backyard of a house across the street and debris littered the 300 block of Gainsborough Road.
The heating and air conditioning contractor was not injured, but the windows of his home were shattered. Flying truck parts left scars on the garage. A vehicle parked nearby was damaged.
The man had stored an acetylene bottle on the truck. Virginia Beach Fire Department Battalion Chief Jack Crandell said fumes from the bottle likely escaped overnight and ignited when the key fob was pressed.
“He was lucky,” Crandell continued. “Had he started it, it would have been a much different result.”
The cause is under investigation, although the explosion was ruled an accident.

I've heard of several similar reports involving other tanks of compressed gases.

I wonder if he'd have simply opened the driver door to get in, if that would have instantly dissipated the gas to a low enough level, it wouldn't have blown up anyways.... had he smelled it (probably) or not.

Something similar happened to an FJ Cruiser owner. Smelled the gas, opened the doors, and when he hit the button to open the window...boom.

Now that I'm at home and can take a better look, it is clear that all the other vehicles on the street are parallel parked. There is certainly something wrong here.

looking at google sat images of the neighborhood....

I think it was in the driveway and rolled out and into the curb across the street.

That makes a lot more sense.

Well, assuming it blew the transmission right out of park and the parking brake wasn't on. And if it rolled over there first, then exploded to create that debris field around the truck in its current resting position. I think I'd still be sending this over to SIU for further investigation. If it is fraud, it sure is a lot better of a job than the ole ball peen hammer + hail claim trick.

True that .... I was just looking at overheads before .. but if you go to 377 Gainsborough Road Virgina Beach, and use street view you can see that is his drive way and you can set up the exact shot in the news clipping.. the drain next to the truck is between two cars in the streetview images. kinda cool .

Also I don't think it rolled then exploded.. the rear door is not seen .. and probably next to the drive way ... don;t forget when the fire fighters hose everything down it tends to spread shit not only that floats but is literally blasted out of the truck by the water .

Irving
08-21-2013, 22:23
Lucky for those cars they weren't parked there I guess. :)

A fire hose blasting through that would explain knocking off the loose stuff like the grill and the few pieces of plastic that look like they came out of the fire hose.

Why would anyone be carrying bottles of explosive gas inside a truck. You have a bed for a reason. The guy was an idiot.

Do you store bottles of gas in your open truck bed overnight? I usually lock things up at night -- gotta unlock the door to get them out and put them in the bed.

Yes I do actually. Bolted into a mount that is locked. I bet this guy would trade the cost of that tank for his truck any day, could have been his life.
