WHEAT RIDGE — A man with a knife chased and stabbed a woman and her toddler son on the Clear Creek trail Thursday morning, police said.

The stabbing happened about 11:30 a.m. in the creek's greenbelt area north of Pierce Street and West 48th Avenue, said Wheat Ridge police spokesman John Romero.
Both victims suffered puncture wounds that were not life-threatening, Romero said. The woman was stabbed in the leg and the boy was stabbed in the abdomen. Both were taken to a hospital.
The woman, who police said is in her early 20s, told police she and her son, who is 2 or 3, were walking when the man jumped out of bushes, chased them and stabbed them with a knife. He then ran away.
An elderly couple and joggers found the woman and her son moments later and assisted them.
Police described the suspect as a white male, about 6 feet tall, wearing blue shorts, blue shirt and black boots, with tattoos on his shoulders and neck.
Police officers and detectives are at the scene, along with search dogs.
Romero said police believe the attacker remains in the area.
"Whether she knew him or not and how it happened is still unknown," he said.

No. The reporter probably want able to verify the age of the kid and based it off the statement from the cops.

Although you are probably right...it's actually quite scary how many parents these days don't know how old their kids are, what their DOBs are, etc. I guess if you didn't want the kid in the first place why would you want to remember their important information?

Just MHO, it doesn't lessen the threat. (I know you aren't saying that). Just because these two have a history, that was not true of the similar case around county line road on that trail between HR and Littleton, or that goofy flasher/stalker dude up on the Boulder trails.

You're right. Doesn't lessen the threat nor does it excuse the guy's behavior. It's just that this sounded like some random attack initially. So based on the fact she knew him I'm just curious about the real story. Could be as innocent as, "Yeah. He lived next door to me and he's been stalking me. I was terrified of the guy." Or, there could be more. Who knows? Again, just curious.

WHEAT RIDGE - A Lakewood mother was arrested Friday, accused of stabbing herself and her toddler on a Wheat Ridge walking trail last month.
Stephany Harwood, 21, is facing charges of child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury.
She told police she was walking on the Greenbelt path Aug. 22 when a man came out of the bushes, chased after them and attacked the two with a knife.
The toddler was stabbed one time in the stomach. Harwood allegedly stabbed herself in the leg. The injuries were non-life threatening.
Harwood told police she knew her attacker. Investigators released a name and picture of the supposed attacker in hopes of locating him.
However, after a lengthy investigation, authorities believe Harwood made up the story and actually committed the attack herself.
Investigators have not revealed a motive behind the stabbings.
She is currently being held at the Jefferson County Detention Center on a $100,000 bond.
