View Full Version : Powder coating a barrel
Has anyone tried powder coating their barrel? My son-in-law has a powder coating business and I was thinking of sending him the barrel to one of my bolt action shotguns and have him powder coat it. Do you think it would hold up let alone work?
Thanks for the help.

The problem with powder coating is it is too thick for firearm use and is not designed for the needs of firearms such as lubricity and corrosion resistance.
Modern firearm coatings include graphite, molybdenum, rust inhibitors and adhesion promoters.
Powder coating is great for lawn furniture and motorcycles frames but a poor choice for a firearm.
Not to mention it just looks like crap, fine details lose definition and edges lack crispness.
I was not aware that the coating was that thick. I have seen other barrels that are painted red and I am trying figure out what is used to get them that color.

Probably red DuraCoat or such.
Thanks for the info. I will take a look at DuraCoat.

Gunkote also has a ton of colors and from what I can tell a slightly better finish.
