View Full Version : DirecTV and Al Jazeera America

Some of you may have noticed the new commercials for Al Jazeera America. It pissed me off so much, I wrote to DirecTV's customer support:

As a long time DirecTV customer (going back to 1998 on my first account), I am appalled and annoyed to see you are now carrying Aljazeera America. Aljazeera has every right to broadcast the anti-American garbage they do and associate with terrorists and thugs but you don't have to do business with them or give them another platform to spread their propaganda.

I've been happy with DirecTV over the years but I'm going to have rethink my account as long as you're going to carry the signal for propagandists against America.

Their response:

Dear Mr. SHOOTER,

Thank you for writing. I understand you are concerned about the Al Jazeera channel.

While we are contractually obligated to carry the said channel, we will review our options once we have a chance to evaluate the new landscape. Al Jazeera America is not a new channel, but rather a rebranding of Current TV, a channel DIRECTV already carried. Since Al Jazeera assumed Current TV’s contracts with providers like DIRECTV, there were no new negotiations or contracts signed to carry the channel. By carrying Al Jazeera America under an existing contract, we’re just maintaining our current channel offering.

DIRECTV is committed to bringing you the very best TV experience. We know you have a choice when it comes to programming providers, and we must work hard to earn your business. Rest assured that many of the changes we make are a direct result of the comments and suggestions we receive from our customers.

Again, thank you for writing, Mr. SHOOTER.

I forgot about "Ozone" Al Gore selling out to Al Jazeera but I'm going to try to figure when their existing contract is up and see whether they really "evaluate the new landscape" (i.e., drop the Islamist bastards like Nidal Hassan being handed a pound of bacon) when it gets close.

I know a lot of people are upset about Al Jazeera coming to cable and satellite here in the US, but frankly I don't think it's going to last long.

I give them a slightly better chance as Air America. Hell maybe a slightly better chance than Current TV (which only had value because of the existing contracts they had with the satellite and cable providers, but otherwise was hemorrhaging money and dying on the vine).

Keep in mind that the only reason MSNBC continues to exist is because its backed by NBC which can afford to run it at a loss ... I just don't know how long the Muslim Brotherhood will be able to run AJ at a loss.

Anyway, I'm going to post my obligitary admonition to cut the cable (or sat) and replace it with Roku + Netflix + Plex.

Although I gave up TV in '06 (should have done it sooner), I don't see one media mouthpiece as being any more righteous than another, it's just another voice in the crowd. The more there are, the chances of sifting out the real news is probably more likely. I always found the international edition of Time or Newsweek (before they folded) to be a more neutral look at the U.S. than the domestic outlets. One more channel isn't going to hurt anyone, if anyone even watches...

Let's just say it won't be on my TV. Dish is advertising it, too.

As much as I hate Commiecast and think they're evil, the reason they carry AJ is because of the same reason Direct does ... they had a contract with Current ... now the reason they don't carry The Blaze is because enough people haven't pestered them yet.

That said, I oppose The Blaze moving to Cable/Sat because we need to stop feeding the beast. We need to heed the words of Joe Dan Gorman (http://intellectualfroglegs.com/) and SHUT THEIR ASSES OFF! Or we're never going to beat the left.

The Blaze moved to mainstream with no support or buy in from anyone other than Beck. He owes nothing to no one and can broadcast what he wants. Love him or hate him no other network can make that claim.

All points of view deserve a voice, but if you're going to air one, air them all.

On a side note, The Blaze also picked up 3 Gun Nation and Hot Shots with Daniels Defense, and Cross Breed holsters are advertisers.

Meh, they are more reliable and less biased than fox news. Outside of the US islamaphobia parade they are considered better than any US "news" channel.

I watched it a few times. it is much better than pmsnbc. I don't know if any of their "reporters" gets a tingle up their leg from Obama, or a short in their vest.

While its wise to treat all news agencies with a grain of salt I like RT and Fox. RT is basically russias version of Fox news. All news pushes the extremes but its a really good idea to have both sides of the extremes

Read them all is what I say. Even if you can't stomach what one of them is saying. After reading 5 or 6 viewpoints from around the world, you can eventually piece together what really happened and who is full of shit.

Absolutely. In independent studies Al Jazeera is shown to me more factually correct and less biased than most US news stations. It just so happens that the mindless masses here love being pandered to and don't care if they what see is presently fairly, or even true, as long as it goes in line with what we want to believe.

Very good point re RT being Rus Foxnews, but RT imo has the national bias more on par with the amount of CNN's liberalism.

What I look for in the news is where they don't pull punches, so sometimes that means checking out rt, or der spiegel, even Al Jazeera (I wanted to see how bad stuff was getting f'd up in the ME during whatever s***storm was occurring at the time, *knowing* they were going to be carrying a bias.

On a side note, the Documentary channel was bought out by the new PIVOT tv (unabashedly progressive).

I noticed them airing the old SciFi favorit Farscape.

WTH let you in here? Considered by what nut job to be "better"

Sorry they lost any chance of gaining respect when they aired the beheading of our citizens and proclaimed the rights of the muslims to be above those of other religions. They are not a news agency, they are a proganda machine for the brotherhood, the taliban, Al Q and anything else anti western civilization. Have you even paid attention to their ads, the trailers are all about how they are going to tell us the truth about our country. They are anti american and are here to spread their hate and anti american values.

That is all....

That doesn't mean that AJ is fair and balanced ... that just shows you how far to the left most US media is ... Tokyo Rose was more fair and balanced than most American "Journalists".

You people still pay for television - whats wrong with you?

I really can't see paying to watch the "news". The only time the news is on for me is in the morning to see the weather and traffic - and I get that over my $25 antenna.

(What do you mean 'you people'?)

if you think for a minute that they are just here to be in business and report the news in an unbiased way you are truly mistaken.

Let us just see how they report on the million muslim march in sept if it actually comes to be.

this country is done, we are politically correcting ourselves to death, the SEC should have blocked the sale of the network... end of story.

As long as there isn't any government mandate that all sides need to be given equal time (a la the Fairness Doctrine) then let them have at it. Nobody will watch it, and they will go off of the air eventually. Honestly I wouldn't get in a tizzy with Directv about this, because as it's been said before they are contractually obligated to carry it. Now once the contract expires it will be worth watching Directv's move. If they decide to re-up with AJ then I would say feel free to lose your shit on them.

Say what you want about Al Jazeera, it is a good source for actual world news. Once you get past the obvious bias against all things western you do get some real reporting about the rest of the world. I read the online version, i imagine TV would be similar. It beats the hell out of having to sift through the CNN website past stories of Brittany Spears' new haircut to find out what is happening in the world.
