I've only been in CO for a year. Now that I'm thinking seriously about preparedness I visited the Red Cross page. They said to be aware of the types of disasters that could hit your area. Other than the obvious wildfires and occasional blizzard, what else is possible locally? I know Lockheed Martin built in Waterton because it was seismically stabile so I guess earthquakes are out.

Wild Fires, Blizzards, and Tornadoes are the 3 biggest ones we have to deal with. Then there's the remote chance of the Yellowstone Caldera, Solar Flares, Viral Outbreak, Economic Collapse, the works haha. Just be a prudently prepared person with the means to protect yourself and property, and magically you'll already be better prepared than most people, for just about anything.

Civil unrest caused by anything is the biggie, IMHO.

Influx of liberals.

Earthquakes have happened: http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/states/colorado/history.php

The mountains were likely created by massive earthquakes, so I'd tend to think there may be a slim possibility of another someday, maybe. Other than that, what's been mentioned already.

There are some fun documents to read here http://www.dhsem.state.co.us/division/resource-library including the states plan for a volcanic event. You can find good info on this site.

One of the biggest I've seen recently is flooding, look at Manitou Springs.

Don't forget hail and expanding clay if you are worried about property damage. Hail does more damage than wildfires and tornadoes each year.

The top three listed on the threat assessment for my county are wildfire, hazmat incident, and severe weather. The only surprise for me was hazmat, but you figure all of the nasty chemicals going to and from mining operations, something is bound to crash.

Seriously?!

And here I thought cavemen and dinosaurs had all died. Or lived in New Jersey.

THIS. Expanding clay was the cause of our home's electrical fire last year. Keep your eye on the electrical cords coming from your fuse box.

Yes, add flood & hail to the list.

And a democratic controlled state government. If the f00ked up new gun laws aren't a disaster, I don't know what is.
