View Full Version : Appliance Repair
Anyone know of a good appliance repairman, maybe in the North metro area?
FYI, I have a dishwasher, 6 months out of the one year warranty that's dead. No lights on the control panel. Tried resetting breakers, tried resetting the inside outlet/breakers, tried different outlets w/extension cords etc. Tried leaving it unplugged for awhile to reset and then re-plugging it back in, all a no-go. Took off the kick panel and the door panel off to check connections and all seems well. I do not have a multi-meter nor do I know how to use one. I suppose a board may have gone bad but I hate to throw money at replacing those not knowing where the real issue is.
If you have any tips or know any guys that do reputable work, let me know.
What kind of dishwasher and model number? Did it have a wiring diagram on any of the panels?
Don't have make and model handy. Maytag maybe. Also unsure on the wiring diagram, maybe in the manual.
I would see if any of the boards have fuses on them. If you were closer I could stop by and take a look.
I didn't notice any fuses. I'll do some research and take a look. Thanks for the tip.

Call Jensen Appliance, give them the make and model and tell them what it is doing. They are very good at diagnosing over the phone.

No worries Robb.
As the unit is completely dark I would suspect an internal main fuse/breaker on your input side of things.
That would be alot cheaper than a new control circuit board. I hope that's the case.

Did you check your circuit breaker panel ? With no meter to check power at the dishwasher, are you sure you have power to the outlet under the cabinet where it plugs in ?

Make sure your breaker at the panel that feeds the dishwasher doesn't just need to be reset.(switch to off and back to on) Amazing how many of those I ran into.
Yup, I tripped all the breakers and re-set them. Yes, outlets are good, I just moved the disposal plug which is under the same cabinet and it worked. And I ran the washer power cord to other working outlets with extension cords - washer no workie. Pretty unscientific methodology but I know it's not as simple as outlets/breakers, etc.
I'll pursue the fuse and Jensen Appliance options this afternoon. I'm so stupid when it comes to electrical... I had the whole thing apart and just figured a circuit board fried, I never even thought of an internal fuse blowing. Hopefully that's the case, the main control board is pricy.
A lot of times it's cheaper to buy a new one then to fix it which sucks. But if that is the case bring it to Harris Park a week from Sunday and put a few holes in it. Also just thought of this was it running when it took a shit? You may have gotten something in the pump which may have popped an overload. Look around the pump for a button that will be extended and push it in to reset after you clear the pump.
FYI: It was the fuse up in the door attached to the main circuit board. I shouldn't admit this but I had that door apart 3 times checking connections etc. I'm so stupid I never considered a fuse initially. Replaced the fuse and the damn thing works.
I wonder why the fuse popped? I think I'll put a surge protector in to possibly help prevent this again although I have gotten pretty good at taking the dishwasher apart.
Usually it's a nearby lightning system. I had to fix about 100 microwaves once due to a very close hit

Just my opinion and worth what it cost you to hear...
but a surge protector is a waste of time . it' only going to protect you from super high voltage spikes ( like from a lighting strike) and will likely blow the fuse anyways if that happens.
Figuring out why the fuse blew is hard to say .
either something inside the dishwasher is going bad and shorting out or it could have been as simple as a manufacturing defect in the fuse itself. replace the fuse with the same rating and wait and see what happens . if it blows again need to dig farther into the dishwasher and figure out what is blowing it . ( pump motor going out and shorting ? heater element shorting out ? worn/bad wiring? )
What was the rating on the fuse ? ( how many amps ? )

When my fuses blow I replace them with shunts. YMMV
