View Full Version : Our pup died...
Well, I can't say much about our place in Texas, other than, I really fucking hate this town... There is lots of stuff I could go off on such as half of the town is non english speaking illegals, or the humidity, the bugs, string of bad luck we've had since getting her, or 15 year leap back in time it is like here... Our house apparently had a dog in it that had Parvo at some point, and our dog just happened to get it from the soil (it can lay dormant for years I guess). The thing is, he was up to date on his shots... He had beed sick for a few days now, and it really looked like he was getting better the last couple days which included being a little playful this morning (first time he's reallynhad energy since the beginning of this). Anyway, we left him to rest in the back area where we were keeping him. I had just got done checking on him, and he was fine, and alert, and as good as you could ask for a dog that was sick. Then, it couldn't have been 10 minutes later as I had just got off the phone with the cable company, I went back to be with him again, and as I entered the room, he started gasping for air. From when he began, to his last breath was maybe 30 seconds... It was hard to not be able to do anything for him, there just wasn't any time... I couldn't put him down, nothing... my wife heard him and came running in just to catch him taking his last breaths........ That was probably one of the hardest things I've ever had to do, which was sit there and not be able to do anything. As I layed him down, all of this liquid came gushing out of his nose, and it was amazingly fowl. The vet here if anyone is wondering, is absolutely worthless, and was not helpful at all. This is a shit bag little town of 8000 people, half of whom couldn't even read this post... I hate this place.
I seriously can't remember the last time I cried before today... AJ, you were loved, and you will be missed.
Guys, remember to get your dogs booster shots for Parvo, especially those with Dobermans, and Rotties, as they are hit the hardest.

I'm so sorry for your loss spyder! What a traumatic thing to witness as a loved one passes in front of your eyes. My condolences to you and your wife as you struggle through this hard time.
Rest in Peace AJ.
Sorry for your loss. It is something I've thought about when the idea of moving to Wyoming comes up is that there are just some services in a city that are not around in small towns. My older dog just got her boosters this morning thank fully and the younger one had his two months ago.

Sorry, man. It sounds like he had a family that loved him. I don't think our little friends want anything else out of life than that.
after you process this for a while would you mind posting up symptoms?

Sorry to hear Spyder. Condolences to you and yours. How old was he?
So sorry for your loss Spyder.
Tragic news. Makes me go and hug my little pup everytime I read something tragic like this.
They are family, and it is so hard when they leave us.
My condolences to you and your family.
Sorry for your loss. That's hard but at least you were there for him when he passed.

The love and the bond that we have with our animals is a really strong one. It breaks my heart to hear about AJ, Spyder.
Some crazy shit dormant in the dirt like that?
http://rainbowsbridge.com/poem.htm ...someone shared this poem with me when I lost a dearly loved animal, might help your thoughts, maybe.
I'm sorry Spyder, hang in there brother.

I'm so sorry. As terrible as it was for you to see it, I imagine that AJ found some peace in you being there, and not having to start his journey alone.
I didn't know that Rotties were particularly susceptible to parvo. I will make sure that Harry is up to date. If there could possibly be any part of your loss that doesn't completely suck, maybe it's that you've passed along that info, and maybe saved some dogs. Maybe mine. Thanks.

Symptoms for parvo are complete loss of energy, no eating or drinking, vomiting, and diarrhea. The usual cause of death is dehydration, or a secondary illness because the virus has beaten the immune system down.
Sorry to hear Spyder. Condolences to you and yours. How old was he?
He was 9 months.

Doberman, Rotties, German Shepherds, and Labrador Retrievers in that order from everything I've heard and read are affected most. Our pup apparently came by a strain different enough from the one he was vaccinated with, and it was done. I can't remember if it is a booster every year, or three, but I would consider it important for all dogs, especially those noted.
Sorry to hear it Adam.
Parvo is nasty. No dog for you for years now man... Don't take the risk.

Sorry to hear. We almost lost our Dalmation to parvo years ago. Scared the crap out of us.
I could spew on about 'how sorry I am for your loss' but I realize how empty that is. I cannot begin to know how you feel. I have two older dogs and I've dreaded their demise since their first week with us over a decade ago. This is sad, I'm sorry - and I know that sentiment doesn't do squat to alleviate what you are going through.

Sorry for the loss.
just keep in mind that all dogs want to have in life are master's that love them. it sounds like you gave him that and frankly dogs will die happy if thats the case. its a tough loss for you but for the dog they had a complete life, even at a young age like that. their priorities are drastically different from ours.

Sorry for your loss !
My heart just breaks for you and your wife. :( I used to work at a vet hospital and every year, we'd have cases of Parvo come in. It's excruciating and hits fast and hard. Yes, it's very important to keep up to date on vaccines.
Parvovirus usually stays in the soil anywhere from 5-7 months to a year; if there is colder weather then it lies dormant in the dirt. About the ony way I can think of eliminating it is to bleach the ground several times over the next few months. Be sure to put a bleach-soaked towel near the door, so you can wipe the bottoms of your shoes.
Parvovirus is horrible. :(

So sorry for your loss!!! We had to put our Rottie down about 18 months ago...one of the hardest things Ive ever had to do but he was mine and I sat with his head in my lap while the doc granted him eternal peace from his pain. Take solace in the fact that you (his alpha) were the last thing he saw and know that seeing you brought him comfort and happiness as he moved on to rainbrow bridge where all our furry family members go after they leave us
I'm so sorry for your loss bro.

That's really a sad situation. Parvo sucks, you basically have to bleach your home and yard to get rid of that.

Sorry for your loss Spyder...
I'm so sorry to read this, my deepest condolences. I'd be devastated to lose one of our dogs. Threads like this are one of the tough things about hanging out on forums, yet they help us learn. I've learned from this one.

Where in TX are you? I'm here and hate it too.

Another message of condolences. :(
I lost a beloved dog from a nasty little pathogen in the soil myself (not parvo). It really is the worst. At least you were there at the end, and gave it the best life possible.
Sorry for your loss, pets are much family as people.

In cases of some people I can think of ... pets are more so. I've got one cousin who is only family to me genetically.
Thanks for all of your support guys, it's much appreciated.

I'm in Perryton, only about 7 miles off the Texas border to the north. I miss Colorado for so many different
reasons at this point, gun laws there be damned, but I seriously miss my home state no matter how much more "freedom" we have here... or, maybe it's just this city.......
Are you farming corn out there?
I've lived in 3 different metro areas in TX. I don't think I'd ever want to live in the panhandle. Still kicking around the idea of moving back and the hill country is probably where we'll go if we head south.
The Piney Woods in east TX are interesting, but don't think I want the extra humidity.
Sorry about the pup.
So sorry, AJ looked like a wonderful doggie friend...............

So sorry for your loss Spyder and I'm sure AJ is being well received by my little girl Gixxer. Don't worry, she'll take good care of him now.

I am down in Dallas. When we retired there was no stopping g-ma from moving here. I should have stayed. Spyder, I do not know if you are into rat shooting, but on my last trip across, I saw a lot of pasture rats out on that highway that goes east out of Dumas. If you have any interest, it might we worth checking out.

Tuff when our pets go before their time. It is hard enough when it is an older pet but even harder when they are taken w/o any type of mental preparation. So sorry.
