View Full Version : Evaluate your food
There is a lot of talk about food on this forum but one thing I've noticed is that it's all largely anecdotal. A very easy way to analyze this for those that strenuously exercise every day is to see how yesterday's diet is propelling them today. If you are stacking food, try what you are stacking for a day or two and then see how your energy level is on a really tough 90 minute workout (be it running, gym, 14'er, whatever).
Conventional-wisdom/common beliefs don't always pan out....

Conventional-wisdom/common beliefs don't always pan out.... I think that I touched on that when I started this forum. http://www.ar-15.co/threads/19906-The-everything-about-food-thread
Now if one wants to store food that is only fit for nothing but hard work in the modern age then good luck or did I miss your point.

I don't think it's so much a case of missing a point as assuming that we know what well-balanced food is without seeing if it individually works out for our own situations. If you have that squared away, delete the thread and we'll all go our happy ways. I'm not trying to alter someone else's behavior, merely suggesting we trial-run our plans based on individual needs. I may have missed that in the original post, it would not be the first time.
I have been fairly heavily into daily output for the past 30 years, be it marathon/10k/14'er/take your pick. I've found it really informative to see what food the day before equates to how much energy I have the next day. I apologize if this is redundant. I'm apparently amiss.
one of the big problems i've found is salt content. Most shelf stable food is high in salt. Like %200 daily values per meal if you eat real portions.

Sadly, it's not just 'shelf stable food'. I was at a neighbors home for dinner last night and the wife made a fantastic dinner....right up until the husband insisted (prior to it being served) that it needed 'more salt'. It'd have been perfect prior to that but his taste-buds needed yet more - I could have float a yacht on that sodium.
At that point you balance diplomacy with dietary concerns.

when sodium count goes down. cholesterol count goes up with food. I looked for low Sodium and the Ch count was staggering, low Ch, sodium was heart attack & vine, high.

-only if eating animal-based food sources. None of the low-sodium foods I eat have any cholesterol.
Go camping with your old supply. I don't recall anyone being disabled due to sodium while having a supply of fresh water.

look up long term high sodium diets. it has some nasty repercussions. kidney issues, insomnia etc
Interesting concept. I went till 4:30 - 5:00 pm today without eating. I usually wouldn't make it past 10:00 am. Has me thinking about what I ate yesterday.

Go 4 days no food & water. day #5 when you can eat / drink is interesting, at least the first hour or so.
very dangerous to go that long without water.
