OK, the wife's birthday present to me finally shipped and arrived. A Vortex Viper PST 4-16X50 EBR FFP. http://www.vortexoptics.com/product/vortex-viper-pst-4-16x50-riflescope-with-ebr-1-mrad-reticle
My conundrum is which AR to mount it to. Is this too much scope to put on a stock 16" barreled AR 10, or should I put it on a HBAR 20" barreled AR 15 ?
Is the 16" AR 10 not accurate and long distance enough for such a decent scope, and more suited for a CQB / battle rifle ?
And is the HBAR 20" AR 15 too small/light bullet for an effective and accurate long range cartridge ?

Thanks for any responses to help me decide which rifle to mount this scope on.

By too much scope, do you mean too much magnification? For what its worth, I have an 8-32x Target Dot scope on my .22lr tackdriver. I don't think there's such a thing as too much scope, if you like a small field of view with more magnification, thats good.

What are you plans for the two rifles? Is the 16" AR10 more of a fun gun, or do you plan to stretch its legs to long distances. Same goes with the HBAR AR15, at what distances do you normally shoot it?

Right now I have only been shooting iron sights on both, 100 yard max due to Old Fart eyes.
By too much scope for the AR 10, I mean is the 16" factory stock Armalite carbine barrel capable
of shooting say a 3" group at 400 - 500 yards ?

I am planning on picking up a NM 20" upper for the AR10 when I have enough funds and if they become availible from Armalite again.

Put the scope on it and then you tell us.

I'd put it on whichever on you're grouping better with.

or, maybe the one that you don't shoot as well with iron sights.

Crap. Now I don't know.

Put it on either(I'd put on carbine) and work with it, while waiting for new upper.

I made a mistake in the link, I've got the MOA reticle. Not that it makes a difference in which rifle to put it on, just wanted to correct the information.

See, there ya go. We don't care which rifle you put it on! [LOL]

I'd say, put it on which ever one you'll be shooting more of, and want to work on precision/long-distance. If you have 100rds of 308 and 5000rds of .223, it'd make more sense to throw it on the AR15 since you can shoot it a lot more.

And yea, I kind of agree with Fentonite. Sorta. Because I could argue that you should put it on the rifle that you are getting WORSE groups with the irons. Then, you'd have a rifle with good groupings with irons, and a rifle with potentiatlly good groupings with a scope.

[Dunno]

Sounds like you need a new rifle for the scope because your current ones aren't suitable for the scope. Thats how I would sell it to my wife and then mount it on the 20".

Drop it on the 16" .308 . My 16" FN was capable of 400 yd steel shots with iron's, when i could see 20 yrs ago. You should be able to do 400 yds easy if not 5, being able to see that far makes it more enjoyable.

Put it in a Bobro QD mount, write down the change in zero going from one rifle to the other, and use it on both. You'll figure out which one you like soon enough. My Bobros return to zero within about 1/4 MOA.

I'm all for this.....I'll have to start working on the wife little by little, or let her go to BlackHawk. For any amount she wastes at BlackHawk, I get to spend an equal amount on frivolous gun stuff..........[Tooth]
