I cannot fathom why this man did not retrace his path to get back to civilization to self rescue so to speak.

Sure glad he made it and can go back to his family. IDK how much I would like rats, but do what you have to to survive.
Also the time he was missing is their winter and maybe one reason he couldn't have walked out.
