View Full Version : New Iphone Uses Fingerprint Scanning
Thoughts?

*shrug* useful if it works reliably. (for that part of the year where you dont wear gloves)
print is stored & compared locally so there shouldnt be a central DB of them.
It wouldnt affect my descision to get an iPhone either way,
If the app developers use the technology for say banking, etc.. it could be a hit. However, as it looks now its just another Gimmick..

For now 3rd party apps cannot access the scanner. Apple claims data is saved on phone only, but the NSA also says its not spying on Americans.
They should have had the fingerprint scanner part of powering OFF the phone. When you get your phone stolen, the thieves are going to turn off the phone so you cannot track it.
What happens when you put a case on it like a life proof one?
I was not impressed at all. Now if you look up the video that does the projection keyboard and the hologram video along with the fingerprint then I would be very impressed.
Instant fingerprint to physical ID mapping.. all wrapped up neat and tidy for someone. He'll people will even pay for it.
Haven't we already proven that the Telco's will sell your information to the highest bidder or give it away when asked?

Anyone who has a CCW .. the Fed's already have your prints.
what's it matter if they have one more copy of one finger ?
As small as the biometric sensor is, I doubt it will be at all reliable. I'm quite confident that there will be issues with its security and reliability.
We've had biometrics on our laptops for years. Our IT Security dept. is still not confident enough in the technology to let us actually use it.

If it's on your phone it can be accessed.

What about sharing phones? Can more than one print be stored?
Yes you can store several keys. Another note iOS 7 is awesome, I loaded it this morning on my 4s
iPhones are overpriced pieces of junk that are made to fail.

There is NO way that this is going to be reliable. Avoid.

My 6 year old original iPhone that still works and has great battery life ( use it as an mp3 player and other mundane tasks) says you are quite wrong sir.
Do you have to scan before you can dial 911?

Haters gunna hate. [Shake]
The better half has a Gen 3 iPhone and has beat the poop out of it. Still works just fine. I'm sure that is an anomaly.

http://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2013/09/11/apple-new-iphone-not-storing-fingerprints-doesnt-like-sweat/
Apple's new iPhone 5S, which comes with a fingerprint scanner, won't store actual images of users' fingerprints on the device, a company spokesman confirmed Wednesday, a decision that could ease concerns from privacy hawks.
Rather, Apple's new Touch ID system only stores "fingerprint data," which remains encrypted within the iPhone's processor, a company representative said Wednesday.
In practice, this means that even if someone cracked an iPhone's encrypted chip, they likely wouldn't be able to reverse engineer someone’s fingerprint.
Wow they are storing a hash of the fingerprint instead of the actual print? What a great idea, it should be applied to all passwords...
This whole thing is way overblown. It is a way to unlock the phone, instead of swiping the screen you swipe the little strip. It wont be reliable enough to use for banking or true unique identification because then it'll be difficult to use/not reliable.
As for someone getting your prints out of the phone... Come on folks, your phone is covered with your fingerprints already.

Oh no the government will have my fingerprints!! Wait I already gave them to the FBI when I got my Texas CCW and the the CBI when I got my Colorado CCW....
What if someone steals my finger print and then has access to all the other things I use my finger prints to access?! (nothing). What if someone steals my finger print, makes a mold of them, then commits a crime, and leaves impressions of my fingers at the crime scene?! What if I'm texting someone, and they find out it was my wife who actually responded by snooping out whose finger prints typed the text message?!

What if someone gets my fingerprint off my Iphone and uses it to turn on my Xbox One to film my living room whilst I slumber? This is getting worse and worse by the second!

Except the Xbox One doesn't use fingerprint recognition.
I'm going to start making and selling tin foil wrappers for the new iPhone.
...I'll thrown in the hat for free.

so the only 64bit processor in a smart phone is not fast enough for you ? ( twice as fast as the last version)
The only 64bit processor? Its a dual core. I have had a dual core for 2 years now on my Galaxy S2. Heck the Galaxy Note is rumored to come with an 8 core.

No .....
It's 64bit. and dual core.
the iPhone4S was dual core also.
DualCores does NOT equal 64bit. it equals 2 32bit cores or in the iPhone5S's case... 2 64bit cores.
How many 64 bit programs are there for phones? Next to none...
Really the Iphone is a joke the screen is small and the price is insane. Don't look at one cross eyed or the screen will shatter.

Why would there be any programs for 64bit phones yet ?
THIS IS THE VERY FIRST ONE!
programs will follow . kind of a stupid argument.
I've broken a few iPhone screens.. and seen as many of the android phones broken too ... glass+ drop = break this is a simple concept. tho I haev to say the 4S has treated me well and I've not broken it yet ( in 2 years)
and yes I just knocked on wood. LOL
I don't understand this obsession with massive screened phones. I find them awkward and inconvenient to use and carry ....
If I need more screen space.. I'll grab my laptop or a tablet. maybe that's just me.
The problem with the Iphone screens is that they aren't fully supported.
I have beat the living hell out of my galaxy S2 and have not cracked it. I also rarely see them, in fact I have never seen a galaxy S2/S3/S4 cracked. I am sure it happens but not as often as Iphones. I thought I phones where good till I saw the long term durability of them = [pileoshit]. The stupid part is all the goofballs in the press that go gaga for them because they are so solid/built of metal. Which means they transfer impact to the screen and viola.... crack
I am waiting for the Galaxy Note 3 to drop. Its big, but hey I have big pockets and I use that phone for work stuff.
The Galaxy is so big that the name is fitting.

Hey your phones not for callin its for footballin! And with the iPhone you can't even see the whole football.
You need 64-bit processors to address more memory. This is totally unnecessary on a phone until the phone becomes the new Mac Mini with dongles hanging all over it with an external keyboard, mouse, and a monitor.
Wait did I just agree with nynco??? [Beer]
My smartphone has a quad-core processor. Just sayin'

Yup!
I'm shocked. Shocked I tell you.
It's been a rough start for Touch ID and iOS7 security (http://www.zdnet.com/iphone-5s-security-limping-out-of-gate-proving-it-has-a-lot-to-learn-7000021114/)

I admit that I've been an iPhone guy since they came out. I was an AT&T customer for years before that - it's the only service that works up here at the house. Sooooo, when the iPhone came out I got one and got on the $20 unlimited data plan. Still grandfathered in bizatchez! I won't be switching anytime soon. All of the iPhones I've had have worked great. And I'm no Apple freak. No iPad, no Mac, etc. Just the phone, which does what I want it to do without turning it off for months at a time.
Downloading the new OS now.
