View Full Version : Sump pump - own one!

If you have a basement or crawlspace, own a sump pump (buying one right now likely isn't possible but when this is over and they hit the shelves again, go buy at least one pump, preferably two). Even if you think your elevation relative to your community makes you immune, you are not.

The ground here in parts of Boulder is so saturated after four days of rain that even homes on hillsides and elevated streets are having their basements and crawlspaces flooded due to the ground just not being willing to accept any more water. Some homes have four pumps running just to try to keep up with how much water is in them.

I have always wished I had a basement in my current home, or a crawlspace. I have never been happier that I have neither of those options. If I ever do, I'll own a large diameter hose and a high volume pump, with a generator to power them in case the electricity goes out.

It would be nice if the damn HOA at the condo I'm renting would fix their sump pump and get another one to keep up with the water. Every time it rains hard I"m in the basement garage pushing water back towards the pump and drains.. but as a lowly renter, I think I'm done helping the neighbors that never pitch in. My truck will be the last vehicle to get damaged from water.

I have two. One in the sump that is hard wired with a float valve. Another in a box that I have owned for years.

Now is also a really good time to recheck the drainage around your house. Go out when it is coming down hard next time and look for puddles, those have to be fixed to flow away. (says someone who was out there in the rain with a pickaxe scraping some channels to the sidewalk/road)

I have one mounted 3 feet below below the basement floor and it turned on last night. I think that is the 1st time in 20 years the water table got high enough to turn it on.

Although not as readily available this far from the coast, a couple of 4000gph bilge pumps would likely be a worthwhile alternative to a traditional sump pump.

The water has to have a place to go. Lots of hose is a good thing too

We're still dry here, but I'm motivated to pick something up for next time. Anybody have any recommendations on model?

Is this http://www.amazon.com/Superior-Pump-91250-Thermoplastic-Submersible/dp/B000X05G1A/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1379023522&sr=8-1&keywords=sump+pump any good? Has good reviews, but I know nothing about pumps...

I was recommended 3/4 hp or stronger depending on the height distance to the drain. Others probably can chime in with a better advice.

Depends on how fast the water comes in. I am using two right now. The regular size one can't keep up. (garden hose size)
Had to hook up the 1 1/2" pump, it does it's job WELL.

$85. http://denver.craigslist.org/hsh/4052706571.html

I've got a similar item, works good if the water isn't full of big trash items.
