View Full Version : My safe is broken - need a locksmith

So my house was broken into this week. They tried like hell to get into my safe but failed. They did manage to rip the electronic lock off of it, and somehow broke the handle/wheel which engages the door bolts - it just spins now. It has external hinges, but there are non-moving bolts internal on the hinge side, so cutting off the hinges does nothing.

Now I can't get into my own safe. The manufacturer will not do anything about it because it was not bolted down, even though it was in the basement. Any recommendations for a locksmith that can help?

No help because it wasn't bolted down?

Is that standard practice? If so I need to get drilling.

Yea, that sounds more like an insurance telling you the contents aren't protected because you didn't bolt the safe down or some BS like that. Who is the manufacturer?

So sorry to hear about the break-in, glad to hear the safe survived. But now they know about it, I hope they don't try again. I don't think I'd buy that brand of safe again! What is it, so the rest of us can be warned?

Kinda torn there, it did it's job but the company is crap.

It's a BigHorn safe, made by Rhino. The warranty contains a sentence that states the warranty is void if it is not bolted down. That's what I get for not reading it through. I kept thinking "I should just take the hammer drill down there and bolt it down. Naw, it's in the basement, who the hell is going to try to steal it?" Live and learn, die and forget it all.

I'll shoot a PM over to opie. Thanks for the info.

Which isn't actually a bad thing... If it's giving YOU this much trouble imagine how much trouble it would give a bad guy.

Regardless of the company's stance on it all, the safe did it's job.

Wow, those are kind of dick terms in the warranty. Guess I better check mine but I figured a safe that weighs 1200 pounds before you even load it is pretty safe from someone trying to knock it over or carry it away.

Thanks, man. I think that's what we're going to do. I need to get a replacement before I start cutting on this one though; can't leave everything unsecured.

I think I would rather pay a couple hundred to have it popped and repaired before buying another one.

Sorry to hear, but if it's not bolted to the floor, it's an easier target.

Something as simple as placing it just far enough from a concrete wall so the door swings open but doesn't let them get in with long pry-bars in front is a great deterrent.
