View Full Version : What buffer/spring for mid length?
I have an 18inch Daniel Defense mid length barrel I am gonna put on the DD Armory upper once it's ready. My lower has a standard carbine buffer and spring but i am not sure it will work with the longer gas system. Am I gonna break something if I try to run it with the carbine parts?
I run all mine 16"ers with H buffers. No problems at all. Very soft shooting as well

sure you can run the standard carbine tube, spring, buffer with any barrel length including a 18" middy. You can play with the different springs (like x-power wolff) and/or buffers H,H2,H3 etc.
So is the buffer I have an H buffer? Sorry for the dumb question.
You can run it with the stock parts. I doubt it would be any more overgassed that a 16" barrel with a carbine length gas port.

Does it have an "H" on the face of it?
I run a Carbine buffer and spring with 18" rifle length systems. Runs like a champ. The longer the gas system, the less the gas pressure and depending on some other factors, volume. So you would not risk damage and actuall y you end up with a rifle that is not so harshly over-gassed so increases longevity.
My buffer has no markings on it so...... I am just gonna press on and shoot it then. Thanks all for the help.

it should to be a standard 2.8-3.0 oz carbine buffer

As long the gun throws brass 3 to 4 o'clock of the gun, it's all good.

That is a col chart, never saw it before but definitely useful for diagnosis. Thanks.

I have a middy, and I went to Bowers, the guys there told me to go with the flat spring that they carried. I use that with a standard carbine buffer. Perfect ejection.
Also, I love that chart.
I tried the carbine buffer/spring I had and the gun works fine. Put 50 rounds through it, brass all goes back to the same spot at about 4 o'clock. Really a cool feeling to build a gun on your own and have it work, cycle like it should and be pretty dang accurate. Kind of like building your own flyrod and tying your own flies and catching fish on them.

Darn right, That's why i recommend that everyone build their first AR. It can be hard figuring out what buffer/spring to use, but like i said before, that's why I recommend the guys at Bowers.
