View Full Version : I gotta say- I really like Krav Maga...

And definitely want to stick with it in the future. As some know, and some don't- the explanation for my being away from here as of late has been due to my following my dreams and doing the Red Rocks Community College Law Enforcement Academy. We've been going hard since mid-August and I cannot say that I hate a single minute of it. Sure there are times when it really sucks- like doing our weekly organized PT with one of the CSP instructors who has us doing some of the roughest crossfit workouts I can imagine... but it's great! Well today we started our defensive tactics and arrest control, and as per CSP and most departments now, the new paradigm for officer defense is Krav Maga (the Israeli self-defense fighting form). Today was one of the hardest days physically I've had to take on, but it was a helluva learning experience as we were taught how to fight not only standing up, but also from our knees and back. And, like shooting, I'm addicted at the first punch! So now I want to really try and be the best I can be and stick with Krav after the academy ends in December and I get hired on at a department... does anyone here do Krav, or know anyone who does? Where is a good, reputable studio where I can hone and improve my skills once on a department?
Miss chatting with a lot of you... no homo... [Coffee]

There have been a few topics on this. Search is your friend.

I've been an instructor (only teaching up to lvl 2 material).

Prior to last year I was in class 4x a week, between that and bjj. Which they should really be supplementing into your training as krav has shit for a ground game.

I need to get back to it.. Just afraid of fucking up my back more, no krav wasn't the cause.. At least not the root, but the higher levels of training are very brutal..

As posted before... It is very tough once you have been at it a while. I went hard for about three years back when it was new, any more advanced and I would have had to go out to California. Had to quit as I got tired of explaining at work why I was always so beat up looking.
It is fun as hell as long as your body will let you do it. I sure didn't feel the need for a CCW back then.

If you find a place on the west side of town let me know. It has been awhile since I looked in to it, but I didn't find anything close enough to the foothills.

I think it's really good that you're enjoying it so much. Good luck and I hope you find the job you want. Can't help you with the KM, though.

U will not find many departments that use Krav Maga as their DT. Most mix up their own or use PPCT.

That being said I went to Colorado Krav Maga for a year just as another tool to stick in my belt. It was great, and I went to some of their LEO only classes too. I went to their Broomfiled campus. But I stopped after I realized I was having a hard time compartmentalizing what I learned there away from what I needed to do in my PPCT classes and certifications. For me I need to stick to one DT or i get all mixed up. IF you can keep two different disarming techinques straight cool but I could not. That being said. Krav has some better weapons retention and disaming moves than PPCT.

There's always gonna be someone tougher...

I will second Monky on supplementing your ground work.
Greco Roman wrestling is not a bad area to delve into either.

Glad your enjoying your new pursuits.

Krav is great. El Paso county uses Krav for arrest control. PPCT is great if your opponent doesn't move. Krav has some decent ground work, but the Russians are still the king of the ground. Check out some Sambo or Systema as well.

I'm not a fan of krav. I think it's a fad. I am a bjj/Muay Thai guy myself. BJJ you learn how to control someone completely, through pressure and pain. I am not an officer so I can't speak on the legal ramifications or policies if you throat punch or eye gouge someone, but I would think that would be frowned upon.

Greco Roman wrestling is not a bad area to delve into either.

As an adult, you'd probably find better training opportunities in Judo than Greco. As a kid Greco would probably be better, because you'd learn more traditional wrestling at the same time. But Judo would probably be more effective in a scuffle, and I'd think that would be especially true as a cop. Learning Greco means learning not to use your legs in your throws, and you might as well learn to use your legs if you've got them. Also, clothes.

Hey, I wouldn't mess with a high-level Greco guy, but I'd be more confident of remaining on my feet than against a high-level judo guy. You can slip away from a Greco guy with a little experience, but a Judo guy starts grabbing your clothes and you aint goin nowheres.

False. Sambo is effective, but outdated. And Systema? You must be joking.

There's a reason why ADCC and Metamoris are packed to the gills with BJJ guys. There's a reason why when you adk who the best grapplers in the world are, everyone mentions Braulio, Marcelo, Vinny, Cyborg, and Werdum.

Time and time again, Judokas, Sambo practitioners, and countless other grapplers rise to the challenge. And time and time and time and time again, BJJ guys who are often only purples or browns crank, choke, and smoke all comers.

Learn BJJ to the blue belt level, then find someone to teach you basic freestyle wrestling until you have a solid double, single, and a few trips. There's not a criminal on earth you'll run into on patrol that will be able to outgrapple you.

Alright.. it's turned into a 'my e-peen' is bigger than yours...

I've worked with a few PD's who trained Krav for their SWAT guys but it's not their standard curriculum. More of a supplement, as Krav isn't made for control, it's to put someone down.

I don't think it's a fad, it's just the new kid on the block... I like it. Maybe for the looks I got when I'd walk into work all bruised.

Ronin.. bottom line is to check learn what they teach you. Once you get on a PD find out what their policies are.. Never think you're the toughest kid on the block. Never.

One of the guys I work with was on the Olympic Judo Team. He's been doing BJJ since before it was cool. He's been a PPCT/arrest control instructor since before I was born....

Even he isn't as cocky as some of the people I've seen on this website....

Wouldn't it be safe to say there's no "perfect" skill set. I wrestled for 15 years ( a lot of freestyle and Greco as well as Folk ). I've coached a bunch as I've grown older. I really wouldn't recommend an adult over the age of 30 getting into Freestyle or Greco. It's a lot of throws and if your like me, it hurts a hell of a lot more to be thrown when you get older. It's a great sport for kids but wrestling is something than is honed and developed for years. It's a lot if muscle memory. It's a hard sport to just "pick up". Just my opinion.

I will agree that trying to be an actual wrestler in one's 30s is probably a fool's errand. But like I said, learn to shoot the double, grab a single and ride the pipe, and trip from a clinch. If you can learn some Thai or Judo hip tosses, all the better.

You've apparently never played on the mats before.. you get over the 'gayness' the first time you get schooled.

Now.. I have a funny story about showing a 15 yr old girl why her arm bar attempts were failing.. I felt like a perv.

There was a 'gap' that I had to show her..

Monkey if my only shot at winning a fight is to "ride the pipe" I'm gonna have to concede defeat

That's the truth!

One of my buddies is a local mma fighter, and was Training/fighting for top team for awhile. I trained with him a few times while I was still living down south.

My first bjj day with them I got paired up with a 135lbs who if I remember correctly was a purple belt. I was a very fit 165lbs, so I just thought I'd out muscle him (which I did for about 1 minute), mind you the only bjj experience I have is what I've learned in Krav. Needless to say, that "little guy" schooled me!

I wrestled forever so you'd think I'd be over it, but the first time I went to a BJJ practice it felt really gay to me. I felt fine going live, but drilling technique and letting a guy get into missionary position on me, or vice versa, was almost unbearable.

My x, came to watch practice since she was with me and I had to go... I'm fairly certain she didn't stop laughing after the first 5 mins. There was work on north/south.. she actually had to walk outside.
