What is the chest rig for.......just a CCW or Duty firearm or are you carrying more then one kind of spare mag for 2-3 weapons on you?
If for CCW, I do not see any advantage because you will have to cross draw to unholster and that can be difficult in a scuffle or if the badguy is advancing on you and somehow gets a hold of your arm as you are still attempting to draw your pistol.
If your hiking, then I can see the advantages until you throw a backpack on, but it can be adjusted to not impeded on either the backpack straps or the ability to unholster for the 4 legged beasts!!!
This is my personal opinion and try to keep anything pertaining to CCW as K.I.S.S. as possible. Making it more sifficult to accomedate comfort will, IMHO, not turn out well in the event you do in fact have to unholster to protect yourself or your family or even bystanders in imminent life threatening danger.
Chest rigs are for "operators"
If you can't get it done with what you can fit on your belt, you should have thought a lot harder about getting to where you are.

A chest rig might be usable when you are fishing a river with waders on......

+1. Sort of my sentiment. I can see the rig for various classes that might depend on the many features, but for real world and everyday, go KISS and the belt.

In the LEO world chest rigs are great because mos guys belts are already full with a few pairs of cuffs, gun, handgun mags, taser, baton, peper spray, radio flashlight etc. So for LEOs a quick chest rig or plate carrier that they can put on is best. for civilians who may be responding to an emergency in their neighborhood, work or for self defense a battle belt is great because it can be lower profile and can hold everything you need, Pistol, mags, blowout kit, flashlight dump pouch etc. Right now I have a plate carrier setup and a slim/light blueforce gear chest rig. The blueforce tenspeed chest rig is as light as air when not filled, is low profile and holds 4 mags. As long as you do not fill up the molle on both sides you can zip a jacket over it even fully loaded and none will be the wiser. In prone exercises i had no difficulty. However, I always run a primary reload in a rifle mag pouch on my belt and the 4 on my vest are secondary reload.

I use a belt for CCW unless hiking or backpacking where the hip belts prevent being able to carry or to access. For that I have the drop leg holster.

I've just attached things to the hip belt on the backpack in those cases. Not much concerned about concealment when wearing a big old pack.

Yeah I was looking at doing the same thing but neither of my hip belts on my backs really allow for it with the holsters I have.
Both packs have pockets on the hip belt that pretty much block me from putting the pistol in a holster there. I'm not worried about being concealed when I'm walking through Natl. Forest.

Tactical chest Rig for CCW would be silly (unless you're talking about a shoulder holster in which case its still silly but not as silly as a "tactical" chest rig).

Chest Rig for hunting with a big revolver is just good commonsense.

Not me ... just a photo I stole off the interwebs. My guess is its scoped and the grip looks rather Rugerish to me.
Chest rigs are also a bit awkward for people with a bosom...

Belt, unless you are in need of armor. I went with the Brokos also.

OK, so far looks like most lean towards a belt setup. Should have been more specific in my OP.. This is for a tactical rifle class I am taking so this is not for CCW. Looking for minimalistic, 4 mags and a drop bag primarily. Should be hitting Bowers this week and will try a few different things out.
Thanks!
