IN & OUT BURGER SUCKS Tried them a few years ago in CA, eh nothing special. Chowed down on a #2 this afternoon, FUK ME. I'd wait in line at the clown, or kings, for a cheeseburger before i'd eat another one, even if i had not eaten in daze[facepalm] Knew we should have turned left in to Chik -Fil-A instead of In the mouth & Out the anus
Bad enough they couldn't get the order right for 4 people, a soggy LIMP excuse for meat combined with fries , which BTW, i've had warmer ones just out of the freezer.

DUDE it's CA. While down visiting the Inland Empire, for a few days on the trip. IF we started at the first corner east of 15 we could have ate mexican food for B/ L/ an dinner everyday, and not have made it past the 2nd light. That doesn't include the Taco, Burrito, Torta trucks parked in between the restaurants.

Yo, Jmetz
Cool to meet ya today, and thank you, Sir.
Man I couldn't disagree more! I have had every burger up and down the front range. Everyone says they know the best burger if you try such and such place. I've always loved In N Out and that has yet to change no matter how many burgers I've had.

The only In-N-Out burger I had was in Arizona (Where there are more conserative values leading to better employees and better quality product?)
and the fries were great, since they were a whole potato about 10 minutes before they were in my posession... and the burger was done right, and was good quality!
I think your problem is with CA, not with the chain (but they're based out of CA)
Lowest common denominator?
I very rarely order burgers. I have no idea how I can answer your question. Maybe 10-20 different places? I have them so infrequently that it'd be difficult to draw comparisons anyway.

I have to disagree.
...and they try too hard. A good burger can stand on its own without getting crazy about toppings. I've had a better burger at Smashburger.
My wife never understood the attraction for In-n-Out. You couldn't pay her or her dad to eat there.

Quality of the meat, how they are cooked, seasoning, all make a big difference.

Don't eat a lot of fast food, but am forced to on occasion, like lunch at the gun show :D . I've had In-N-Out twice while traveling in CA. Not really impressed at all.
I will say that recently I stopped at a Wendy's late at night in SLC in lieu of chewing my arm off and the Pretzel burger they had on a special was pretty good.

If it was SoCal or SF then yes. However i was in central CA where EVERYONE I met had a gun, including their kids. Zipping up and down the roads on their atv's ARMED. So i'd ruled the CA out of it.
The burger was a lifeless piece of "meat", with no consistency, flavor or value, worth buying a second time.

So how do the burgers at the places mentioned compare to say at Red Robin?
At one time In and Out was special because all other burger places served Mc Donalds quality crap. But times have changed and there are better places that out do In and Out. I would take Smash Burger or Lark Burger or even Goodtimes over In and Out. I and O is just overrated and coasting on nostalgia.

I like Red Robin's burgers. Smashburger and Crave are good too but IMO they get kind of crazy with the toppings and mixes. Never tried In-n-Out and frankly am not even curious about them. Five Guys is totally overrated ... their beef has no flavor and the buns are insubstantial, Wonder Bread with a pseudo-crust.

Nothing, depending on the quality of the steak and the roll and the price. I haven't seen any place around where you can drive up and get a good steak and a roll to go.

Far too many places spread themselves too thin, relying only on name recog, without monitoring/regulating/controlling quality and consistency.
I'm sure we all know of one or two exceptional joints that tried to expand, only to compromise and fail.

1- the time frame, 7 years can make even Mila Kunis look horrible (hoepfully not)
2 - consistency of the patty, lifeless, soft unlike a decent burger. When you bite in to one you expect Flavor, CONSISTENCY OF REAL MEAT The I&O had neither.
3- The bun and cheese had more flavor and consistency than the burger.

Likewise. We do FF rarely, if that. However it was on the way to the airport and we needed to hit the store across the street from it. Never ate at an actual In N Out but have eaten at Drifters (http://www.driftershamburgers.com/) here in Colorado Springs (which is an In N Out clone started by, I believe, a former In N Out exec).
It seems to me that the point of the place is not that the food is awesome or that it's a superior burger (although I found it to be a better than average burger) the point is that its cheap but still good. I do agree there's probably a bit of over-hype to the place as most of the people that go on and on about the place are Expat Californians so it's probably more about home sickness than it is about a good burger.
Comparing it to Red Robin or 5 Guys or Crave or Smash Burger or one of those other expensive "gourmet" burger joints makes as much sense as complaining that its not as good as a chopped Kobe beef burger at The Broadmoor. Its kind of like complaining about the quality of the Mexican food at Taco Bell ... Taco Bell isn't Mexican food, it's Taco Bell, so within its own particular idiom it's pretty good, but no its not comparable to real Mexican food.
Compared to McDonalds or Burger King I'd say (assuming Drifters is a good facsimile) that In N Out comes off pretty well. And considering my wife and I can get two burgers, two drinks and a metric ton of pretty good french fries for $13 we'll probably be back.
That said, for your "big chain" burger joint nothing beats Carls Jr.

If In-N-Out compares to Drifter's then I'll stick with Wendy's or Carl's or A&W for a quick inexpensive burger. I was NOT impressed with Drifter's in either taste or price.
Drifters actually came to be from the closing of Classics back in the day. Drifters sure is a great burger! I also must agree on CJ. I love the burgers for breakfast.

I recognize that everyones tastes are a little different and what I find excellent someone else may find distasteful. This is why some of us can't imagine certain restaurants thriving.
Personally, I've been in both Smash Burger & Crave and just couldn't justify spending the money they wanted for a burger. While I've eaten at Red Robin several times, I think their burgers are just okay too - but I love their endless fries (yum). Here in Colo Spr, my favorite burgers come from Freddies & Drifters (very similar style burgers). Agreed, not bad but way over priced.
While I've eaten at Red Robin several times, I think their burgers are just okay too - but I love their endless fries (yum).
God yes, their fries with ranch dressing (they make it with buttermilk ... mmm) and I liked their burgers a lot before they went through a couple of price hikes and then I decided it wasn't worth it (that and way too many children ... and I reflexively hate restaurants where they sing for people's birthdays).

(that and way too many children ...
One day a few years back we went to the Red Robin off of Powers & N. Carefree. We were sitting in our booth when this booger-picking snot-nosed (literally) little kid came and stood next to us and just stared at my wife. After about 10 seconds of that my wife looked at the kid and said (in a not-so-nice tone) "Beat it kid". The kid went back to his table and tattled to momma who then gave us a dirty look. We returned it with an icy stare ready to jump her sh!t about controlling her kid if she said one thing to us. We still laugh about that.

Yes, the word "TOP" is subjective. In the article "TOP" is defined as "Number of locations".

One other suggestion is to try a place that just opened out in Glendale called Big Smoke Burger. The meat is good, the bun sucks.... but wait wait wait... its the only place I have found in Colorado that has poutine and does it right. That alone is worth the visit.

Truth! I've worked all over the country and eaten damn near every kind of meal wrapped in bread there is, and the no-name joints are usually the best IMO. I grew up on burgers from one certain place in my hometown in OK and they're still the standard I compare all others to. I got to the Springs in '95 and we tried Red Top. They were really good back then. There was about a year period where I didn't eat there but when we went back we noticed a definite drop in quality and taste. We ate at one about a year and a half ago and found they'd continued to go down. We decided then that it would be the last time we ate there.

Only been once in the last ten years it was good burger but had lost the character of the place, back in the day tops in Denver.
Back in the 60's, 70's and early 80's in Commerce City, Ol Joes Shack, wasn't far from being an actual shack. Neighborhood favorite, not much of a neighborhood, but great burgers. The Super Maxi and family fries would feed family of four. Handmade 1+ pound burger patty, huge bun, whole tomato sliced, whole dill pickle sliced length wise, and 1/4 head of lettuce, hand cut potatoes with skin, fried perfect. Pretty much drive thru(used to cal ahead, that burger took alot longer to cook than the hockey pucks served these days) or carry out, only room for two tables and carry out window inside. Real dive, but great burgers and good times remembered.
When the grand kids ask what is was like when I was a kid, this is one of the ones I tell them.

Kroll's in Green Bay, WI. Right across from Lambeau Field. There's one on the east side that is apparently serving a little better and cheaper menu.
They have a hard Kaiser Roll burger with a slab o butter on that will curl your toes. Nothing super special about the meat, but they're yummy.

My first In-n-Out was in the Las Vegas location and it sucked balls. Super crowded with thugs and other questionable people. Burgers were "meh". Then, my wife won a radio contest that flew us out to L.A. to have lunch at the original In-n-Out location. It was awesome. Though it wasn't a fair comparison to the Vegas store as this meeting was a promotional gig and the Execute VP of Marketing greeted and served us whatever we wanted. go to the clowns, ask for an uncooked burger. let thaw, melt cheese on it then consume. You can throw it in a frying pan to take the chill out, isn't gonna make a difference.
Have you been to Euclid Hall? They have great poutine.
Euclid has great gravy... but they made me sad when they melted the cheese. Its supposed to be cheese curds still stabable with a fork partially melted by the gravy heat. They broil it and turn it into a melted mess. Big Smoke is the closest thing to the real poutine that Co has. Burgers are pretty good too.

I prefer Tommy's Burger when in the OC. They had just expanded the In and Out to AZ right before I left. They are good, but not a Tommy Burger w/ Chili. http://www.originaltommys.com/

IN & OUT In AZ ? That the new border patrol policy? Or the massage parlor / strip joint, opened up, where the Alaskan Bush use to be?
Will trade in-n-out for ammo. Of course, it'll be at least 6-7 hours old by the time I get home and you have to pay the extra baggage fee. Let me know by noon tomorrow. LOL.

At least some aging might improve the taste.
