View Full Version : Bald Eagles spotted
I am consistantly seeing 3 bald eagles behind my house. I am hoping the DOW can observe them and hopefully keep the land from being developed. Since they are endangered and trying to re-coup in colorado hopefully they can do something to protect them.
Anybody know whether or not anything can be done to stop development for endangered species? especially our Country's Bird.
I will try to get some pictures of them and post them on here. They have been doing a pretty good job on prairie dogs. I just watched on this morning swoop in and snatch a smaller p-dog and carry him off[Beer]
Depends on the developement... Last summer/fall I was up by Ft. Lupton, doing a project for the City of Aurora.. They Had all sorts of rules and regulations about the Eagles.. For the most part the most stringent were during nesting season....
Pretty cool one day, We was making up control cabinets, and there were two of them just riding the air currents above us.. Got a few pictures with the phone,, can't really tell that they are Eagles though.

Its worth a phone a call.
I have a Bald Eagle habitat by my house. It is pretty nice has a dirt walking/running/riding trail along the outside of it. Every time I run the trail or ride my bike on the trail I see one catch themselves a prairie dog for chow.
You mean to tell one of them hasn't snatched You and carried You off to it's young?[Tooth]
good news! (unless you're a prairie rat) :D
Hate to be the barer of bad news, but the Bald Eagle is not longer on the Endangered Species list.. ask me how I know :)

See literally a ton of them when you go to Eleven Mile.
Saw 2 the other day soaring around the ranch.

Didn't know. It still shows them as such on the DOW website.
theres a place near the springs they have been trying to develop for 10+ year but they cant because of a mouse!

Yeah it isn't widely known I'm finding. Still super protected in a ton of ways, illegal for non-native Americans to have feathers, carcasses, ect.. but the US Fish and Wildlife Service is the organization that is charged with maintaining the Endangered Species lists.
Also something you all might not know is that here in Denver is the National Eagle Repository. 99% of all Eagle (Bald and Golden) carcasses are processed at that facility. The feathers are harvested and delivered to tribes, museums and such.. cool place.

How long have they been there? I don't think of them as migratory, however wikipedia states some do. Also some will congregate in great numbers during winter months or breeding. I also don't think they actually stayed put for long. As mentioned, they are all over CO, i've seen them by my house too. They were gone after several months though. There are certain times of years when they are very thick in some SWA's, and that is why I was under the impression they don't necessarily stay put. The DOW usually puts out an press release when they are all congregating, however couldn't find it on their website.
Anyway, sorry for the ramble, but that may put the damper on having it a protected area.
Yeah they showed up a couple months ago and I have seen them almost daily. I'm not far from a golf course so I am guessing they might have a nest there since there is a younger bird. They just come behind the house to get some chow.
I would love to see the land behind me get labeled as a preserve or something so they couldn't build on it and maybe enhance it for more wildlife but more than likely it will be over run with houses once the economy gets back on track and the developers get their hands on it.

Got a bunch of them around here all the time. There are like 10-15 of them here year round. I dont get to watch them snatch PD's though- but it is cool watching them take trout out of the river.

I saw some in RMNP last September. Imagine, at my age that these were the first I'd ever seen in the wild. Then I saw two just West of Monte Vista late last October. It was neat to see.
There is a couple up here in Fort Collins. One of them is HUGE.
I was in Wisconsin fishing for Musky with my brother. He was using a hogwobbler which is a big floating lure that wobbles on the surface.
All of a sudden I hear my brother say, " Oh NO! Its going to get it!"
I look over and I see a bald eagle flying 30 feet from the boat and fly over my brother's lure and grab a perch out of the water about 5 feet from the lure.
Coolest thing I ever saw.
I was fishing in yellowstone a few years back and there was several of them nesting along the coastline. I watched one huge bald eagle (female because they are larger than the males) dive down and snag a large trout out of the water and carry it over to her young. very cool to see!
The best thing I saw with them during that trip was a Bald eagle searching the water then some smaller birds starting picking on the bald eagle and trying to nip at it or something. One of the birds came from the right and the bald eagle did a roll, snatched the smalled bird in its talons, killed it, complete the roll and dropped it in the water!
