ACA is neither affordable or care - just an act designed to further diminish this nation

He's reading Tweets from folks speaking out about Obamacare.

They also had a note that this isn't technically a filibuster since Sen. Cruz is not interrupting the normal course of business unless he doesn't stop before the Senate convenes for business Wed. morning.

Yeah, the Dem majority in the Senate is willing to let it happen over severely damaged legislation. Sounds rough, but as a taxpayer, I'm tired of being bent over for wasteful government programs where the ruling elite create a waiver for themselves. Congress should not be able to pass any law that doesn't equally apply to themselves.

The ones holding people hostage are Obama and Reid because of their insistence on funding a program that was passed via extortion, lies and bribes by ramming it down the throats of citizens and legislators alike despite obvious flaws, despite the fact it is fiscally irresponsible and legally contentious, and despite the fact it has been overwhelmingly opposed by the American public for the last 5 years. Cruz isn't the dickhead here.

Long time for a political ploy. He knew it would fail before it started. He's just trying to get more people to hump his leg in the next presidential primary. Like the 40+ other times they try to defund ACA it's going to not pass the senate. I seem to remember a definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. That many democrats are not about to come to their senses and vote with him.

This sort of feedback loop of ever-more-extreme political purity tests is a familiar enough phenomenon. First, you identify a demon, and spend a few years whipping up a hysterical frenzy over the threat it poses. You want to tie it to a few key words that you can repeat in a derogatory, contemptuous tone of voice, over and over, until the very signifier evokes such a feeling of loathing in your audience that anyone associated with it is contaminated. Let's call it Thing X. Now, most people will think your goal here is to drum up a successful campaign against Thing X and against your opponents, who support it, but this is at most part of the mission. Thing X itself may or may not be terribly important, and your opponents are your opponents; there's not much you can do about them. What is crucial here, though, is that once you've firmly established your followers' revulsion towards Thing X, you can use it to annihilate your "allies"—also known as "rivals"—by accusing them of insufficient vigilance against Thing X.

Yeah, commonly attributed to Einstein, but whomever said it (or repeats it) has clearly never studied biochemistry or genetics.

I agree but only to some small extent. If they force the vote, it is about making every senator go home and explain themselves. Many ran on the "repeal and replace" platform. Now they get the chance to put their money where their mouth is, and they are attacking Cruz, including many from GOP leadership. I won't quite call it a "purity test" that was all the rage 4 years ago, but it is a line in the sand.

No one expects anything of the democrats but to march forward in their blissful ignorance. But, several are from Red States.

I honestly am not at all bothered by Cruz's little show here. Part of me wants Paul and Lee to get in on this.

The simple fact that you're more outraged about their pay possibly being held up, (BY THE DEMOCRATS I might add because they won't fund the government without funding the economically suicidal POS that is ObummerCare) than by the fact that the federal government employs that number of people to begin with says volumes.

Do I feel for out people in uniform that are going to get caught up in this, yes, but Look at what's really going on here. They have a chance to completely fund the rest of the govt by taking out one single piece that a LARGE majority of the country doesn't want. Yet they absolutely refuse to do it. And you're mad at Cruz for playing hardball and doing everything he can to make it happen even when it may be a lost cause. You should be mad at the rest of them for not joining him and making a clear stand. They SHOULD force the Dems into pushing it through 100% on their votes and signatures. The Dems are holding the hostage, not Cruz, Should we start giving Terrorists everything they want when they hold people hostage too because it might be painful? It's the same mindset, and it's the same results. You give in, they do it again and again and again. It's because of people like McCain and GOP leadership not having the balls to stand with Cruz that we keep getting fucked over by the Democrats.

While not technically a fillabuster, I listened to him for about an hour last night and was pleasantly surprised with the discourse he was having with a senator (D) from Virginia. They were having a constructive conversation, while Cruz was tearing the ACA apart at the seams.

In any case, the minute Congress passes anything into law that does not equally apply to themselves, they have effectively made themselves the ruling class.

Back to hypotheticals, if Cruz was on a white house ticket, his best bet would be to run WITH Rand Paul, not against him. (Yes I understand how primaries work. I don't care what happens in the primary as long at the GOP doesn't fuck over a legitimate candidate like they did to Ron Paul)

Ah, the old Democrat "holding XX hostage" rhetoric. As if Obama telephoning Boehner to say that Obama won't negotiate on continuing resolution/debt ceiling is not "holding hostage" but anyone else's tactics are.

He voted to send the bill back to the House for revision. The House version wasn't going to happen. I believe his primary goal was to get the votes supporting the ACA on the record.

http://www.latimes.com/nation/politics/politicsnow/la-pn-obamacare-funding-bill-senate-20130925,0,3939894.story

Republicans in the House and Senate believe a do-over in the House could have better results, if they attach a healthcare provision that would be difficult for Democrats to oppose — such as a repeal of the new tax on medical device manufacturers that some Democrats dislike, or a delay of the individual mandate that all Americans carry health insurance in 2014.

Yeah, I watched that RINO throw Ted right under the bus. McCain is a war hero, but a really lousy senator. Way too many times he joined with Teddy Kennedy to author legislation.

The Dems would circle the wagons if one of theirs was caught on video murdering someone with smoking gun in-hand.

The establishment Republicans are afraid of the values that brought us the Constitution and limited government.

To make clear my position, I am against the ACA in its entirety, though I do not approve of either dems or republicans threatening a shutdown of the gov't over its repeal. The over 40 times tried before failed to clear the senate, so it makes it seem more like grandstanding for his own personal and political gain to be doing this. It also has very publicly exposed rifts within the conservative ranks and could cause divides and infighting that have already cost conservatives at local, state and federal levels in the recent elections. I know most don't think it's a big deal for the gov't to shut down or for people to be furloughed, but the ones that are going to be in a nonpay status won't be Congress, POTUS, executive schedule employees, air traffic controllers or other higher paid people. The ones furloughed will be the park and forest rangers, clerks, accountants, Indian reservation teachers, people making in the 30k-50k range that will be impacted much harder than the "essential" air traffic controllers making 100k, or congressmen making 174k.

The specter of Government Shutdown is WAY overblown ... anyone furloughed during a gov shutdown gets back paid and most of them get help from their unions with short term problems like buying food and what not. The real criminal thing is that Dems will do more harm during a shutdown than they really need to because they want the people to "feel the pain" ... and then blame it on Republicans. Shameful. It's called The Washington Monument Ploy (http://www.cato.org/publications/commentary/averting-washington-monument-ploy) and we have GOT to stop falling for it.

Anyway, the Federal Government has shut down 17 times before (http://firstread.nbcnews.com/_news/2011/04/08/6432513-this-would-be-18th-government-shutdown-in-us-history?lite) with no negative consequences to the people so to claim that a government shutdown is some awful, horrible, terribly painful thing is just bovine scat.

The Dems would circle the wagons if one of theirs was caught on video murdering someone with smoking gun in-hand.
This is why we're where we are. A D gets in trouble and they circle the wagons, an R gets in trouble and they circle the firing squad.

As for Cruz running for President, after this I think I'd rather see him stick around the Senate for a while ... maybe take Harry Ried's job if the Senate goes "R". At least I'd like to see him as a voice of conscience in the senate for real conservatives (someone has to fight McLame, Lindsay and the other RINO trash). Being President is highly over rated, the real power is in the legislature (especially for Republicans since no Republican president would be allowed to get away with 1/10th the shit Obummer has pulled).
