I had many a chance for an FN49 back when.. not the "thing" to have at the time.. now good luck finding one (and I wish I had gotten one myself)

SVD and variants (such as the PSL-54c) shoot the 7.62x54R

basic rifle will be <$1000 (~) with the current market, with optics it could get costly depending on the version.

well, based on the current environment, you may be hard pressed to find anything in that price range now.

I picked up an FN-49 a few years ago. I won't rub in how much I paid for it but it was a good deal.:D It was one of the CAI builds. Fun to shoot and pretty accurate.

Had a chance at a Hakim but passed on it. Wish I would have grabbed it.

I had an FN-49 and sold it when I was laid off a few years ago. I still have a Hakim which is a fun shooter. The muzzle brake makes it a very loud rifle and it is a fun plinker, being pretty accurate.

If you find an 8mm Mauser semi-auto, be really, really careful about the ammo you shoot. A lot of it will shoot fine in a bolt action but kaboom your semi-auto. The burn rates aren't right. I fortunate in that I had a C&R FFL back when ammo was cheap and I stocked up on all sorts of 8mm.

I have heard bad things about the Turkish 8mm ammo that was common. Foreign milsurp used to be really cheap but the prices are through the roof now. Good luck in your search.

I've heard that the Romanian 8mm is good for semi autos. I have a couple of boxes of Egyptian but I doubt I'll ever shoot it.

I have a Hakim I traded for several years ago, accuracy is better than my Garand, but it is back in my trade stuff and listed

I have a couple FN-49s in 8mm and they are good shooters. I also bought a Romanian PSL kit and Nodak receiver when CFS had them on sale but haven't gotten around to building it yet. I see they have kits on sale again butr haven't priced complete rifles lately. The cost of completed rifles versus kits seem to be about a wash, I got the kit because I'm a lefty and want to use an AK buttstock.

my m76 loves romy steel case 8mm for plinking. i'd love to get an 8mm fn49 but for the price they go for it would be better in my opinion to get an m76. psl's can be bought reasonably. if someone is trying to sell a psl for 1000 bucks then they're trying to rip you off. centerfire usually has psl's without scopes for about 500 bucks. also i wouldn't consider psl's m76's or even svd's as "sniper rifles" though people advetise them as such. they are more or less marksman rifles.
