Just ordered some pre-cut tint and I was wondering if anyone on here knows how to install, and would be willing to come install it with me. I have the feeling I could figure it out based on instructions, but I learn best by hand. It would be nice to not screw it up, so I would like someone to help me.
I'll buy you a 12 pack of your choice of beer! [Beer] [Beer] [Beer] [Beer]

Probably cant make it over to show you but its simple.
1. Clean your interior windows
2. mix 1 part baby shampoo to 10 parts water.
3. Spray window, and back of tint
4. Position it
5. Squeegee the soapy water and any bubbles out
6. Trim excess edges with a sharp razorblade.
7. Let dry for 72 hours before rolling window down (its probably dry after 24 but I recommend 72 hours just to be safe)
I'm not a professional installer but ive tinted all my own windows myself, and have never had any problems.

Not sure if something was lost in translation. I'm not looking for a professional job. (Don't have the funds to drop $150 + on a tint job.) I have already ordered some pre-cut tint. And I'm just looking for someone who has some experience to lend me a hand.
I would just try it. or if you want practice, install tint on your garage door windows (if you have them), or something else. practice on a couple things then get it done.

Where do you get the pre cut film?
I've installed tint myself, and although it looks good at first.... mine bubbled
I don't go through vehicles alot so i'd rather spend the money for a professional like TH to do the work.

Supposedly, this kind won't bubble or fade (if done right, obviously). But that's why I was looking for a hand to help, so that I can maximize the chance of it staying and not screwing it up!
What are you doing it on? I've done it before and it can be a real beastie, or a piece of cake. What matters is the curvature of the window.
On some rear windows, they are concave (on the inside) side to side and top to bottom. Those are a bear.
On a window that just curves top to bottom, or a Suburban or PU...piece of cake....no problem.
looks like he is doing it on a subaru.
I just order a front set for my tahoe. for $13 shipped it's worth a shot! Lex, you can come test your hand on mine if you want when it comes in, then you will have an idea of what is going on. I'll just dive into it and see how it turns out.
Tried to do it a few times on my old jetta never got it looking right and no matter how hard I cleaned the window and took my time I would always get bubbles

I'm game Sniper! Maybe we can just set a time to meet up & let's wing it! I bought a tool kit too, because i realized that it didn't include tools for installation. Mine should be arriving before the weekend.
Yes, I am installing the tint on my Impreza Outback Sport wagon. I guess the rear glass will need to be shrunk afterward, but the rest should be g2g.

Shrink before to create the shape.
I left the film on the outside of the glass with a baby shampoo/water solution on the glass to hold it in place. Clear layer of tint should be on the outside. Squeegeed a line to hold it down (with the "suction" of the shampoo solution) and used a dry towel on the clear and dry side of the tint along with a heat gun to shape the film the way I wanted. I then applied the film to the inside of the glass without the creases that would typically show.
alright, hopefully mine gets in soon. probably next week some time after the weather warms up. I'm sure it is better to do it in the warmer weather

Garage door glass is flat, completely different than automotive. You won't learn much other than waste film.

There is some good information is this thread. Baby shampoo is the way to go. I would recommend shrinking ALL the windows, not just the rear. I would also recommend a dry shrink in the back and wet shrink on the sides, otherwise you will get fingers when applying it. I don't use the precut stuff. All the windows that I do are custom cut to "your" windows. The precut don't always fit perfect and you get light gaps.
$13 for film, I wouldn't trust that it won't turn purple, peel, fade, and bubble. I use only high end films, Suntek, 3M, Madico, and Solargard. You get what pay for. If you decide to go the professional route, I charge $220 for wagons, shoot me a PM and we can set up an appointment.

Shrink everything before you apply it.

yep...he has done all of mine
Also have used Jake for 4 vehicles. Quality work!
got my hoe done today and 4 windows on LL's wagon. Turned out pretty good. time will tell I guess. the pre-cut stuff was pretty good for fit. didn't really have to do much trimming except one spot on the tahoe where it seemed to overlap a section of black material on the windows. We'll see what happens to it if it peels or turns purple. I'll probably avoid ammonia based glass cleaner just to avoid the purple.

Trigger, can you recommend a good vendor in C/S?
I have a Challenger and an older Ramcharger I wish to get done...

It was great to meet Sniper7 and learn something new! We definitely improved as we did more windows. My passenger side is better than my driver's side. I'm going to try to finish my last 3 windows tonight. But i am borrowing a heat gun now, so i might be able to fix some of the blemishes

I just wish I could find someone to tint my back glass on my 2+2 but seems to be too much of a challenge for people. Just saying. [Mad]

Might be worth a PM to him to see about taking the cars up to him. Usually they work south Metro area so wouldn't be too far to guarantee quality work at the right price. I know if I were to move back to C-Springs I would not hesitate to drive up here to get my work done from Jake.

So far, not bad for never having done it before! I'd say it was a great buy & a great experience.

You guys keep saying that you need to "shrink" the windows first. What does this mean?
Lex_Luthor
10-16-2013, 16:09
Shrink the tint to the curvature of the window itself. Picture trying to wrap an orange perfectly smooth with a piece of notebook paper.

Right. I understand the idea, but how do you actually do it? Make cuts? Use heat?

Gotcha. Thanks. I've never applied anything to curved glass before.
I need to take pictures of the tahoe as well. your car turned out great!
